Windy V40 - What's New
-
As the year draws to a close, our capacity for surprises is far from dwindling — it's quite the opposite! We're excited to unveil the latest enhancements we've introduced. ☀️
Tide forecast in the forecast detail
A new perk for our Premium subscribers and for those who haven't joined the Premium club yet but frequently travel by sea, this is a feature worth subscribing to to elevate your voyages.
Tides has taken a monumental step forward with its latest innovation: a universal tide forecast, now accessible for any location across the globe.
This advancement significantly departed from the conventional approach, where tide predictions were confined to specific, predetermined areas. In a seamless integration convenience, the Waves tab has been enhanced to include tide forecast data, offering a more detailed and holistic analysis of weather conditions.
How do you get to the Waves&Tide view?
- Place your picker in the sea 🌊
- Expand the picker
- And click on the Waves&Tide tab in the detailed forecast 🚀
Active fires
Announcing an enhancement to our Point of Interest (POI) layer with the integration of Active Fires data, courtesy of NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS). The new data from NASA FIRMS bring near real-time fire monitoring to your fingertips with precision.
Now, we've upgraded this feature to offer high-resolution active fire data that can be seamlessly combined with any Windy layer. Whether you're cross-referencing with satellite details or wind patterns, this multi-layered approach provides a comprehensive view of fire dynamics like never before.
The POI overlay comes with better visualization that you can stay up-to-date with.
Nearest AQ stations
Are you curious about the pollution situation in your area? We understand many of you would like easy access to comprehensive weather data. That's why we are continuously working on improvements to make this possible.
We've streamlined access to environmental health information by positioning Air Quality and Radiation stations prominently within the detailed forecast view, just above the weather stations. This refinement in our interface design ensures you can effortlessly view the closest measurements of air quality and radiation levels at a glance without needing additional navigation.
POI filter for heliports with/without METARs
Airports POI now has a useful new feature: a filter for heliports with or without METARs. This makes it easier to search for airports that meet your specific criteria. Are you interested in checking the flying conditions in the form of METAR but tired of manually checking each airport? Well, you no longer have to! :)
We are happy to bring enhancements continuously; your feedback always plays a big role.
Let us know what you think about the new version! 🙂💭 -

@Korina
Not happy with change to not being possible to change the view to looking the forecast in my iPhone on the side - instead of small view. Especially with an hourly display this is limiting the usefulness of the app for me.

The loss of landscape orientation on a phone is very disappointing.
Being able to view the forecast only while in landscape on a phone was very helpful as it allowed more screen space to see the upcoming weather while minimising scrolling.
In the map view, it allowed the user to orientate the view to see important weather features on the map as required while viewing at higher zoom levels. Weather systems usually move west to east, however with the phone orientation now being stuck in portrait, it means we get a good view to the north and south of us, but we are blocked from seeing east and west. While we can zoom further out, it somewhat defeats the purpose of high resolution forecast models being visualised by Windy in great detail on the map.
It would be great to bring this feature back, as it is very much missed.
Thank You

The Maps are no more corresponding with my favorites location
-
@Lepoulpe357 Hi, can you please provide further details about this issue? Do you have a problem with moved map to the south, when you select one of your favorite locations? If you do, the fix is on its way and it should be fully available until tomorrow.
-
@ewoudsattitude @Herbalist According to the landscape mode, there were certain issues with some visualizations in this mode, however, we see your interest in this format, so we will test it, potentially fix it and probably release it back again. According to this process, I would ask you for patience in this matter.

Widgets broken in this version ? Widgets remaining black after adding. Redmi note 11 pro, MIUI 14 (android 13), Action launcher

@Ondřej-Šutera already 'checked all the boxes' from mentioned post. Cleared cache, cleared All data, reinstalled complete app, no progress ....

@sasbibic Then it is possible that you have installed some kind of SW which can affect widget updates in the background or battery optimization of the device. Windy needs full control over these aspects and it is very often that there is certain app, affecting this, installed.

I'm a climate researcher who uses Windy extensively every day, but I can't figure out how to access the new tide predictions and active fire layers. Help!

@Goreau
In point forecast at sea, select Wave & tide instead of BasicBy the way, the example given in the V 40 announcement by @Korina here above is not very obvious because there are almost no tides in the western Mediterranean.
In my example in Northern Brittany, we have tides of 10 meters and more. -
@Korina I need to find the "picker" to use the new tides feature. Although I may have seen this before, it's not in my skill set.
-
@kpape The "picker" appears when you click somewhere on the map - but only on the website.
- With the detail forecast tab closed, click the map somewhere
- the picker will appear with a yellow down arrow beside the "x"
- click the down arrow and it'll open the detailed forecast tab
On the mobile app, it's a crosshair:
- you would move your map so that the crosshair is over your area of interest
- the top of your screen you should see a bar that includes "Forecast for this location" - click that
- the detailed forecast tab will appear
- at the bottom of this detailed forecast pop-up tab you'll see "Display as: "
- here is where you select "Waves&Tide"
-
@Wheats I found tides after following the drop-down from basic setting. Two things not clear in new version announcement were website use (vs app) and the drop-down step, so thanks.
I would like to leave isolines turned on. Is there an option?
-
@Ondřej-Šutera I reported this too a couple of weeks ago. The map appears to have the same longitude, but many degrees to the south latitude. A Pyrenees favourite will open in the Sahara, and a Canary Island favourite will appear near the Cape Verdi Islands. Clicking on home shows the correct position...
-
@Korina Interesting additions, but a daily total of kw per m² of sun generated would of interest too to those on boats, motorhomes, houses, which rely on solar panels for their power supply, and it would only require a little programming to post the result at the bottom of the page, such as shown in rainfall accumulations, for example

@Zorro-the-Fox
The shifting bug moving the map to south is now fixed with V40.0.7 update. -
@Korina
Are you able to add this forecast to the options? It says it's open source.. and, what do you think of it?https://deepmind.google/discover/blog/graphcast-ai-model-for-faster-and-more-accurate-global-weather-forecasting/?_gl=11qruwh5_upMQ.._gaMTc1MjI3MTg3NC4xNzAwMjM2Mjcw_ga_LS8HVHCNQ0*MTcwMDIzNjI3MC4xLjAuMTcwMDIzNjI3MC4wLjAuMA..
