        SO2 unit in Windy is really mg/m2 because it is total amount of this gas in a column of 1 sq m2 from ground to the top of the atmosphere.

            Copernicus provides SO2 detailed content up to 50 hPa level. So I guess the column is up to this level. I don’t think above it the SO2 amount is really significant. When the satellite sensor “takes the picture” it is the picture of the total column of SO2 even if this gas is not present up to the limit of the atmosphere.

              @idefix37 SO2 is sinking quite fast, so the Windy value / 10.000m is probably a quite good guess for the surface concentration.

                I don’t think you can extrapolate the value at ground level from the amount in the total column with a good accuracy.

                  You can see per level the data from Copernicus. At ground level the SO2 amount is different from that at higher levels.

                    @idefix37 Mainly winds and rain affect it. Sadly the air quality layer doesn´t mention it.
                    pH of precipitaion was another interesting value...

                            Sure, the Ulawun plume reaches the top of the troposphere, so it is certain that this volcano gases are mainly carried by the winds at high level and not by those near the ground.

                                Why do you think that CO is at ground level ?
                                It has never been at 500 hPa level but in the total column from surface up to the top of atmosphere.
