playing long range forecast models
-
I apologize in advance if this is covered already, but I could not find it in help or on website - how does one play the long range forecast models?
-
@lookingatwindy
Windy shows ECMWF model and GFS up to 10 days. Longer forecasts are not available within the app. -
@idefix37 Hello! yes thank you I do see that. I remember using an animation that "played" the forecast with whatever layer you chose (that the model supported) - how is that accomplished?
also, I was poking around the web and found Windy.app - are you affiliated with them? it looks just like your website... they show a full animation for their 10 forecast, the way your site used to easliy do...maybe windy pulled this functionality?

I’m not sure to understand what you mean.
On windy.com or in the its mobile app, you can tap the play button to get the animation of the layer. But for a faster animation file, you can use the Video animation feature.
https://community.windy.com/topic/8207/create-weather-animated-gifs-on-windy-comConcerning your second question, windy.com has nothing to do with windy.app.

@idefix37 Yes I do see the play button, but it only shows the option for 1 or 3 hours. A year or so ago, I had seen a way to play the long range 7 or 10 day forecasts, with whatever layer we chose. how do I get that to work?
-
@lookingatwindy
The play button still works for me on 10 days, even if the animation is a bit slow. So it is a bug if the animation is blocked after 1 or 3 hours. -
@idefix37 I can see it does on the webpage (not sure how I missed that before), but the android app is only giving me 12h 6h 1h looking at a live map page, and when I go to a favorited location, it only gives option for 1hr or 3hr
-
@lookingatwindy ok more information: on the website, my forecast animation bar is the full 5+ days (w/ ability to extend to 11 days), and SOMETIMES it is only 1/3/12 hours - is this somehow contextual, or is there a way to toggle back and forth?
I can't seem to find anything for the full long range forecast in the android app - what am I missing?
-
@lookingatwindy anyone have any ideas or comments?
-
@lookingatwindy Could you please share the screenshot to get a better view about the thing you are looking for. It would be best to display it on the desktop, so we can find it in the mobile app for you.
-
@Ondřej-Šutera oh sorry been touching grass for a few days I'll try to capture what I am talking about today
-
@lookingatwindy ok this might be long winded, but I'll make a few posts w/ images which hopefully makes it clear, so here goes:
the attached image "windy10daywindforecast.PNG" shows the 10 day wind forecast for a 'favorited' location in Mid-Atlantic, USA region.
all of the windy.com images are using the default model, ECMWF model.
-
I then switch to the Radar and Satellite: Weather Radar layer, and the animation switches to Forecasting a much shorter timeframe loop (only 1 hour, or 6 hours, or 12 hours forecasted).
I seem to remember windy.com used to have the same long timeframe loops (10days) for this layer (and I think many others), the last time I visited the site (maybe a year ago?).
-
Here is a competitor, windy.app, that on their free live map shows a 10 day forecasted precipitation animation like windy.com used to (am I on crazy pills - i really thought windy.com had this)
one really nice thing those folks have done is to keep an archive of PAST weather, so you can go back in time, VERY COOL!
-
As a set of app suggestion items:
- Being able to view any layer that is validly built thru the selected forecast model (or otherwise available based on data) for long range forecast, out to (10 days) thru an animation would be great. I think everyone that uses these types of applications understand that the accuracy of the forecast model decreases with time into the future...
1b) As many layers as possible :), but precipitation (rain, snow etc.), WIND, of course, radar, satellite, temperature, pressure, waves, lightning, dew point, UV index, currents & tides, sea temps, weather warnings, lightning, swell size would be a great start.
-
being able to change the time increment for the forecast animation, say from very discrete at 5 minutes up to 6 or 8 hours per step would be PHENOMENAL. maybe this doesn't make sense beyond the 1st 5 days? Im no meterologist, so I defer to you all :)
-
To have Real weather History available would be great, and would draw a ton of users to your platform I'd bet... an archive going back as far as data is available should be the goal, but even a single year would be amazing
-
@lookingatwindy Windy.com has never had any forecast data for 10 days in radar layer, since these data are basically observations so only past data are provided in that layer.

As I already said, the animation of any layer up to 10 days for the longest forecast, works for me by pressing the play button. So there is a bug at your end. Due to browser / device ?
You could try on desktop to use the L/R arrow keys that allow to move step by step through the time line. -
@idefix37 ah yeah my bad - it's not radar data, but precipitation data via "Rain, thunder" menu item. does the "Rain, thunder" summarize all types of precipitation under it including new snow, or is that totally separate?
-
@lookingatwindy
The “Rain, thunderstorm” include all type of precipitation.
