<![CDATA[Windy's Version 41 is here and brings new features!]]>We're thrilled to introduce Version 41 and guide you through its latest enhancements: Radar Nowcasting for a 1-hour forecast ahead of time, and two more aviation related features: Icing severity and Clear Air Turbulence.

Radar nowcasting

Our radar nowcasting feature allows users to see weather conditions up to one hour in advance, directly on the radar map. The process is calculated by optical flow, which is calculated over the whole composite at once through the process of extrapolation.

Icing Severity

The icing severity feature offers automated, objective, and reliable forecasts of the probability of encountering icing conditions in different altitudes. This feature may prevent multiple aviation risks, such as the process of take-offs and landings or frozen precipitation on an aircraft. The layer is available in 5 different weather models (ECMWF, GFS, HRRR, NAM, ACCESS).

Remember to change the altitude, as the Icing Severity layer may change dramatically at different altitudes.

Clear Air Turbulence

Clear Air Turbulence (CAT), often viewed as a threat to aviation safety, makes it difficult for pilots and onboard radars to detect. It's a critical tool for planning air travel and understanding the broader climatic conditions. CAT also can to be interpreted in terms of altitude.

This layer is available in 9 weather models (ECMWF, GFS, ICON, ICON-EU, ICON-D2, UKV, HRRR, NAM, ACCESS)

What would make it even better, is to add this "threath" in the premium planning mode, especially in the IFR zone. Now I usually use more the VFR one even if flying IFR, where you can better see the clouds.

Is it just the same parameter as official ECMWF website shows (https://charts.ecmwf.int/products/medium-cat?base_time=202408191200&flight_level=9144&projection=opencharts_europe&valid_time=202408191500) but multpied by 100?

Couldn't agree more. Just want to be able to swipe the white line portion without having to deal with the red "future" radar.

Please, Windy, allow us to disable the "future" cast.

Yes, please! Make the "forecast" optional!
Mixing actual data with forecast data is a bad idea in general.
With the current implementation it also seem impossible to know what you are looking at. Sometimes "5 minutes ago" seem to show an actual radar picture, sometimes it is likely a forecast, because the radar picture has not been updated yet. No way to know really, but when precipitation move into areas where there is no radar coverage it can't be an actual radar image.

A clean and easy to use radar view was my primary reason for getting Premium subscription. As the current radar view is now yet a version of the Rain Forecast view, I'm not going to renew my subscription.
Sorry, but this was a really bad design decision :-(

Its a very useful feature. As others have mentioned - a "heavy rain starting near you in X minutes" feature could be cool similar to the 'Rain Parrot' app. Keep pushing Windy team. Your the best out there, love what you do. You make weather look so good

It might sound "picky" but when scrolling back and forth it can be tricky to "stop" at the end of actual data. For me at least, knowing the most up-to-date and 'raw' info is far more important than a "smear" suggestion of where the precip might be 15/30 mins from now. The prediction is rubbish at estimating cell genesis/weakening, only movement, and honestly I trust my own intuition far more, so it just gets in the way. I'd love an option to turn nowcasting off.
