Windy's Version 41 is here and brings new features!

Wonderful 👍🏻

Hi, thanks for the Nowcasting feature. Now I got 3 apps that can predict the rain in The Netherlands. (The other 2 are https://buienradar.nl/ and https://www.buienalarm.nl/)
There is 1 thing I find a but annoying about Nowcasting. If I press the play button on the rain radar it runs the "last hour" animation, but after that it stops.
What I would like to see is that the animation directly progresses into the forecast once the "real" data has been shown.Could you add this?
-
A great option would be to allow the user to identify what they want.
- enable/disable radar "forecast"
- if enabled, animation can go through both actual radar and forecasted radar.
- if disabled, eliminate the forecast data portion of the timeline, only showing the actual radar data.
- ensure this user defined setting saves to the cloud
This option could be just like the 1h/3h forecast switch.
- enable/disable radar "forecast"

@Polina-Nozdrina, Windy a great app, but strange radar nowcasting with a "forecast" for 12, 6 or 1 hours in the past and only one hour in advance?????
-
Radar nowcasting is a good feature. Obviously the whole Windy app is just amazing.
What I am missing is doppler radar, so I can tell snow from rain, etc. I guess would only be surface level, but one never knows!

The radar loops for 12, 6, or 1 hours in the past are NOT a forecast ! It is observation by real radars installations, while the “nowcasting” is just extrapolation of the last picture of the loop. Are you really thinking that extending this extrapolation during the next 12 hours would be reliable ? You would be very disappointed in stormy and convective weather.

I subscribed to Premium a month ago so still getting to grips with the various features and the nowcasting feature is very much welcomed. It is useful and gives you an idea of where the rainfall is heading providing its on a incoming front for example but it is still quite limiting to just an hour. It would be good to see the information predicted in the precipitation layer applied to the radar layer to provide more reliable predictions and idea of intensity however, I understand that the radar's main purpose is more of a 'live' feature rather than predicted.

Thanks for the most recent update. I love the new Radar Casting feature as a good possibility of what's coming. I think any true weather watcher understands its limitations but is is a great addition. I know there will be people asking for a 3, 6 or 8 hour but we know the confidence level of accuracy would be minimal. This still continues to be my favorite weather app.

I am Windy Premium user

@Alex-H-Jones , it is hard to combine radar images with model forecast, because they are different, so we are not doing it. The "radar forecast" is just extrapolation of the observed movement. In most cases, model calculations are outdated compared to radar measurements and do not include the last observations. Also Windy provides multiple models with different predictions. So to keep things clear we separate model forecast from radar.
-
@wolf1983 There are model forecasts for 72h prediction in Windy.

@Polina-Nozdrina congrats for new topics! I have being using every single day to 🏄♂️ or 🪂… you are the best weather fcst. App… Outstanding!!!😜🤟

Honestly, I love the now-casting feature. I've been doing it manually on Windy anyway by using the distance plotter and estimated distance covered by cells in a specific time period. Super cool! I love where the devs are taking the app. It's undoubtedly one of the most powerful weather tools in my arsenal, and I use it daily in both my day-to-day life as well as in my capacity as a commercial pilot for big-picture weather information.
-
My Feedback: I first will say Windy is one of or is the best weather website. Thanks!
Regarding Version 41: Unfortunately, I do not like the "Radar Nowcasting" as it is easy enough to extrapolate what will happen in one hour in my head as it is to see the simulation. If the simulation someday became dynamic (as opposed to static), that would be a different story. Thanks again, Larry Falk -
@lawrencefalk Hi, can you please explain this in a detail, what exactly do you mean by static and dynamic simulation?
-
@Polina-Nozdrina esto es excelente.
Tener una visualización de este tipo, es como tener una esfera de cristal que nos dice el futuro. -
I really like the Windy app for it's detailed and precise interface. Didn't find any other app that would come even close.
But I don't like the 'nowcasting' at all. Very dumb 'optical flow extrapolation'. Anybody could visually estimate the same, if not better. But that feature blocks some valuable space from the slider bar. Please remove that dumb 'nowcasting' and leave such bad features to all the stupid apps out there. Windy is better than the rest. We don't need that optical flow extrapolation.

I love the new forecasting radar! Like many others, it was a feature I was hoping would one day be implemented; it was a pleasant surprise to see it when I was tracking storms in my area. Keep up the great work! I'm always astonished by the new features the Windy Team keeps adding. Thank you.
-
As a pilot, Windy is my go-to app. The new features will be helpful with flight planning with Clear Air Turbulence being particularly helpful. My favorite feature in the Windy app is the Meteogram with its different forecasting models. The ability to pull up METARs and quickly view the skew-T log-P sounding forecast is invaluable. Thank you to the developers!

@Polina-Nozdrina
At 77 I'm blown away! (Pun alert)
Y'all have moved weather reporting from an art to a deep layered science.
Any predictions on when our wonderful world will providentially transform from ungodliness to a pleasant place for us peasants?
Thanks to you all for all the passion put into the works!!
