Windy's Version 41 is here and brings new features!
-
We're thrilled to introduce Version 41 and guide you through its latest enhancements: Radar Nowcasting for a 1-hour forecast ahead of time, and two more aviation related features: Icing severity and Clear Air Turbulence.
Radar nowcasting
Our radar nowcasting feature allows users to see weather conditions up to one hour in advance, directly on the radar map. The process is calculated by optical flow, which is calculated over the whole composite at once through the process of extrapolation.
As this is a brand new feature on Windy, we'd like to hear feedback from your side. Let us know what you think in the comments. One of you can win a Windy sweatshirt!
Icing Severity
The icing severity feature offers automated, objective, and reliable forecasts of the probability of encountering icing conditions in different altitudes. This feature may prevent multiple aviation risks, such as the process of take-offs and landings or frozen precipitation on an aircraft. The layer is available in 5 different weather models (ECMWF, GFS, HRRR, NAM, ACCESS).
Remember to change the altitude, as the Icing Severity layer may change dramatically at different altitudes.
Clear Air Turbulence
Clear Air Turbulence (CAT), often viewed as a threat to aviation safety, makes it difficult for pilots and onboard radars to detect. It's a critical tool for planning air travel and understanding the broader climatic conditions. CAT also can to be interpreted in terms of altitude.
This layer is available in 9 weather models (ECMWF, GFS, ICON, ICON-EU, ICON-D2, UKV, HRRR, NAM, ACCESS)
Even more impressive with Windy Premium
We're delighted to enhance your Windy experience by making it more seamless and adding new relevant features. Icing Severity and Clear Air Turbulence layers are available in a 10-day forecast (ECWMF and GFS model) with Windy Premium.
Become a Premium member today and enjoy all the perks which you can read about here!

It'd be nice to have an option to disable radar nowcasting, while in some cases it's a nice tool in broad-uniform sorts of rain, other cases like Tropical-convective setups it's just a nuisance at best as it doesn't really show an accurate picture of the rain.

@Polina-Nozdrina appreciate the new Nowcasting feature... this automates what we all try to do manually. 👍👍
-
@Finlet-AU We changed it in the last update so you do not see nowcasting unless you click to "red bar".

Hello Windy creators. At first, I must say: great work! Windy is the best weather app for me. That is why I bought premium account. But about radar nowcasting - in actual form - it is not so good for me. I was able to guess the direction of the rain using past pictures motions. At first moment after visiting windy, I took the slider and drove forward and backward. But now, the slider is not that long because radar nowcasting is here. And its current form is not very accurare. Rain clouds cover breaks up very often during the journey. I was actually looking for a way to turn it off but I could not find this option. But I believe it will evolve and become better and better in the future. Other upgrades and fuctions: wow! Excellent work from you! A very wide range of possibilities. Best weather app. A možná bych vám to mohl psát i česky, protože možná česky umíte. Skvělá práce. Jen tak dál a přeji spoustu elánu do dalšího vylepšování. Není důvod váhat nad premium účtem, protože toho skutečně přináši hodně. Mějte se

Loving the radar nowcasting. Been waiting for this feature for years ! It seemed to work well in the past few weeks I have been testing it.
However something is still missing. A graph intensity of precipitation for the given location for both observations and coming hour. This would be the cherry on the cake.

@Polina-Nozdrina Thanks for the updates. Windy’s radar option has been the most accurate and detailed source for me over the last three years which have been primarily spent in the Eastern Caribbean. I do see a slight issue with the future cast. Similar to another poster, I would slide back and forth to anticipate incoming rain. For example, right now in Martinique the squalls are moving in from the NE. But the future cast has them suddenly doing a hard turn from the east instead of continuing their trajectory.

@Polina-Nozdrina I am not loving the future radar and I think that is I am used to reading the radar and have a good idea of where it is travelling. I would love to be able to turn that feature off if I do not want to utilize it so it does not take up as much real estate on the screen. I love your program and use it daily and look forward to using all the other new features. Keep up the great work all!

@Denis-Legrand said in Windy's Version 41 is here and brings new features!:
This would be the cherry on the cake.
The English say the icing on the cake :)

Love the new nowcasting feature, but it would be great if there was a way to easily return to the most recent actual radar image (middle of the slider). For example, you could place a ‘detent’ in the middle of the slider so that it would snap in place when near, or possibility double-tapping the slider would return it to the ‘now’ position.

@Polina-Nozdrina I am very excited with these new features especially the icing and CAT for aviation. I will let you know if I have any feedback to provide.

The radar nowcasting is great, but I would suggest to add a local rain forecast based on radar to that (displaying something like „rain at your location will start in … minutes and will last … minutes“)
-
I glad for the forecasting radar
The weather channel app predicts up to 72hrs ahead. Why stop at just one hour. I understand like all predictions the greater the time lead the greater the error.
But an hour does little to help plan.

Like the new nowcasting feature, but switching between the past radar and nowcasting is a bit clunky with the slider. It’s tough to get it to just the right spot to get it to play the nowcasting versus past. Maybe a toggle switch would work better?

Radar nowcasting is great feature. In fact I used two weather apps just because Windy didn't have this feature. Windy will be my primary weather forecast app for my Pacifict Crest Trail thru-hike this year, wherever data available. One hour visual forecast is just enough to manage to camp and be ready for rain :-). Allow me to modify thru-hike greetings and say - happy forecasting :-)
-
may I have a wish for future updates? Windy is my primary app to get ready for Pacific Crest Trail. To be in a picture of snow pack, temperature over 4300km, I recorded cca 80favourite points at the map. And this is a weak point for me - to manage all points - for instance to sort them as I wish to see them - is very difficult. I would appreciate better favourite points management. Thanks a lot for great app.
-
I really appreciate your dedication to new features, and the continued development of your excellent product. I use Windy probably dozens of times per day. Please never sell out! xoxo
-
Just here to say, DUDES ROCK. Thank You Windy for helping ensure the best forecast for me to catch waves!

Wonderful 👍🏻

Hi, thanks for the Nowcasting feature. Now I got 3 apps that can predict the rain in The Netherlands. (The other 2 are https://buienradar.nl/ and https://www.buienalarm.nl/)
There is 1 thing I find a but annoying about Nowcasting. If I press the play button on the rain radar it runs the "last hour" animation, but after that it stops.
What I would like to see is that the animation directly progresses into the forecast once the "real" data has been shown.Could you add this?
