Guys, could you please elaborate a bit more on nowcasting? Do models such as Arome and ECMWF provide such thing? And what led you to add it in the first place?
I am not an expert, but wouldn't it be more useful to have a % chance of precipitation map for say like the next 30-60 min? That would be so cool.

        Hi @alphadan
The source of radar data is usually the national weather service of each country. Therefore, a single source or model does not make the weather radar . To be more precise, it's a radar composite of these different sources. You can tell that the weather radar quality varies around the globe (quality = frequency of images, resolution, handling interference, etc.).

Since we know the movement of precipitation several hours in the past, we can extrapolate the next movement of this precipitation to the next hour. This part is purely our work.

A chance of rain in the next 30 - 60 minutes would be nice, but you can see it beautifully on the nowcasting radar. :)

As far as I know, there is no such thing in the plan. The wet-bulb temperature layer can do the trick pretty well, don't you think?

Windy Radar is an accurate and detailed source at this time and I use, although I still combine with the situation and conditions real time, as well as using weather aids, due to activity in SAR (search and rescue) and often in disaster areas in Indonesia (at the moment hydrometeorological disaster is happening in Indonesia).
Thank you for the update and I hope to go ahead with more features that are granted without reducing accuracy and precision levels.

@idefix37 The radar forecast is basically a model. What's in the past is real radar data. You only get 1 hour free nowadays. That's why you will not get 12 hours free because you can't get 12 hours in the past for free anymore. Now, 12 hours would be more reliable than say 72 hours. In summer, such short-range models even for one hour cannot handle thunderstorms very well. Especially the HRRR, which Windy already has. So, you might be disappointed even if there WAS a 12-hour free forecast of radar. You might just be better off with the 1-hour outlook.

@idefix37 said in Windy's Version 41 is here and brings new features!:

The radar loops for 12, 6, or 1 hours in the past are NOT a forecast ! It is observation by real radars installations, while the “nowcasting” is just extrapolation of the last picture of the loop. Are you really thinking that extending this extrapolation during the next 12 hours would be reliable ? You would be very disappointed in stormy and convective weather.

This is what I said in a previous post here above. So why are you trying to explain to me what I know ? Read again my post.
Then there is no connection with the fact that the past 12 h and 6 h are not free and with the possible extrapolation duration.

Nowcasting has nothing to do with physics (as you describe it it is only a calculation based on what we see on the screen prior), so it's useless.

@Polina-Nozdrina Thank you so much for this info. I've relied on Windy to keep me safe and make good weather decisions as a pilot, and it's always been the most accurate and reliable weather product.

I love that you now have an icing product.

                                Thanks!

@Polina-Nozdrina The Icing Severity layer should be called Icing Probability. In aviation those are two different things and the layer seems like it indicates the probability of icing at different altitudes, not the severity (trace, light, moderate, severe) or type of icing (rime, clear, mixed) present.

Just a thought. Love you guys!

welcome to the modern world. Selling wrong weather data in nice and beautiful pics and gifs.

Since about 1 year your indicated weather data is significantly wrong. There is an offset of up to 10 degrees. What a shame for weather experts.

You were talking about temperature in Kelvin (K). Which layer do you use ? I guess you are using the Satellite infrared view, am I right?

Could you tell us where is your location in order we can compare the forecast temperatures in Windy with that of a weather station near your location.

@Wheats I echo this. It might sound "picky" but when scrolling back and forth it can be tricky to "stop" at the end of actual data. For me at least, knowing the most up-to-date and 'raw' info is far more important than a "smear" suggestion of where the precip might be 15/30 mins from now. The prediction is rubbish at estimating cell genesis/weakening, only movement, and honestly I trust my own intuition far more, so it just gets in the way. I'd love an option to turn nowcasting off.
