ECMWF releases a much larger open dataset - AIFS

For people interested:
Medium-range data of the latest beta version of the Artificial Intelligence/Integrated Forecasting System (AIFS) are also available at a resolution of 0.25 x 0.25 degrees.
Medium-range data of the latest beta version of the AIFS are also made available at a resolution of 0.25 x 0.25 degrees. This is the resolution at which the AIFS is currently run. More information on the AIFS, including a link to access the data, is available on the AIFS machine learning data page.
“We're excited about the next step for the AIFS on the road to a full operational system, giving users data to test and use," says ECMWF’s Machine Learning Coordinator, Mat Chantry.

@anthony10 The question is, will Windy add AIFS as another forecast model to Windy?

-
@anthony10 It is not planned right now or in any plans for this year for now. However, it can change in the future.

@Suty Thanks Suty, I've noticed that a few other websites are adding AIFS to their global forecast list.
Meteologoix has a few global models.
Meteoblue is Windys close competitor in regards to UI and large list of models offered.
Pivotal is another website giving a range of models.

@anthony10 Here is recent example of AIFS competing with our global models.

@anthony10 AI modeling is an interesting and exciting step forward. This is likely a major part of the future of weather modeling and the ECMWF AIFS is showing decent results. Unfortunately it seems that while in some ways it is superior to the deterministic model, there are still systemic issues with AI model outputs. I recently attended the AMS conference and sat in on several talks about AI modeling. The biggest problem right now is the output often comes out blurry, so that interpreting isolines on various parameters can be difficult and/or inaccurate. I'm sure this problem will be overcome eventually.

It looks like the AIFS model was added in the latest iOS update but I can't find any way to actually choose it in the app.
-
@stephenm00 Windy as only added the AIFS onto the end of the ECMWF forecast. It’s not a separate model. 🤷🏻♂️
-
@anthony10 It would be more useful if we could compare the ECMWF IFS with the AIFS.
-
@堀田遼介 I agree, the more models to compare the better.
