Plugins not compatible

@gwicke Are you sure it hangs ?
@vicb, in both Firefox and Chromium I am getting the "this page is slowing down your browser..." dialog after a while, and the plugin does not load as expected. Here is a profile captured in Firefox:
Interestingly, the profile still seems to be referencing 3.0.2. The plugin UI lists the version as 3.0.3. @Suty, what is the expected upgrade behavior for plugins? There is no explicit "upgrade" button in the plugin listing. Are users expected to pick up the latest version of a plugin automatically?
-
@vicb, after manually deleting all windy site data in my browser, logging in again, and finally reinstalling the plugin to make sure it does pick up the latest version, I can confirm that https://www.windy.com/plugin/sdg/49.263/-121.882?namConus,clouds,49.263,-121.882,10 loads without a hang. Thank you for fixing this!
Hopefully the plugin upgrade & installation workflow issues can be fixed on the windy side. /cc @Suty

Hi @Suty
The instability created by version changes is all the more regrettable given that Windy and its plugins are a remarkable and unique solution on the market.
I wanted to know how the adoption of the new version is being managed with plugin developers. How much time do they have before the switchover to the new version to update their plug-ins? Would it be possible to trigger the switchover when the most popular plug-ins are available? If not, this will generate a great deal of frustration among end-users, and can sometimes have unfortunate consequences (as for me, I find myself blocked in the long-term planning of my VFR flights).
Or would it be possible for the web version to temporarily support both the old and the new version as a Beta, so that at least when a plug-in is needed, you can go back to the old version?
Regards

@François-DUMONT I'd like to give some perspective as a plugin developer (the sounding plugin).
Most of the plugins (if not all) are developed by volunteers that get no money in return. I never heard someone complaining about that but in the long run nobody really wants to work for free. It is time consuming to maintain software. I have been maintaining the plugin sounding for ~6 years and I started to really question if I wanted to continue or not.
What I did is to add a "buy me a coffee" page to the plugin for users to be able to sponsor the development. I got a very positive response and it gave me the motivation to keep maintaining the plugin. More than the money I was really please by the great feedback I got.
Hopefully we can figure out a solution for the plugin developers to monetize their plugin. The windy team is open about that and super helpful.
Now about the timeline: the changes were announced in early 2024 which is plenty of time to port the plugin and the team was again super helpful on the chat.
The new plugin architecture is much better than the previous one, kudos to the team for the improvement.
As a maintainer of several software project I can assure thaw we usually hear more complaints than praises and it would be great that people also think about thanking the maintainers - you did just that at the beginning of your message and it's great.
I know some people are hard at work to convert the remaining plugins, please give them a little bit of time.
Thanks

@Suty Do you mean I have to carry my laptop up to the hill every time I want to go paragliding?
-
@Honza-z-Borov How do you mean that?
-
@Suty The most important paragliding plugin is not working on Android(again(again due your version upgrade!)). The last usable forecast update is around 9:40. By this time, every paraglider is on his way to the hill. Differences of 1-2 m/s can be crucial for paragliding. How can we check this without a laptop?
-
@Honza-z-Borov Can you please explain what plugin you are talking about ?
My guess is that the confusion here comes from the fact that nobody really understand what you are referring to.
