New Position of Altitude Slider very bad
-
The new position of the Altitude slider is horrible. Before the change you were able to access the slider directly from the map, now you first have to open the menu and half of the screen you wanted to see slides out of sight. Very bad. :-(
Especially for pilots to have directly access to the altitude slider is essential to see the different wind condition.
Please change it to the way it was before or relocate the altitude slider directly to the map! Thanks -
@Jay-Withaflame
This seems to be the case when using small screen like iPad. What is your device ? -

The new Altitude slider position is absolutely user unfriendly. As is the whole new GUI of the windy web version.
The graphical icons for all the variables look nice. But in the former, text oriented menue it was much much better to find everything. Please go back to how it was before!

@Jay-Withaflame
So you should have the Altitude slider here :I think there is an issue with small screens.
-
@Jay-Withaflame I have to agree, clicking/pressing to open another panel to get to the slider seems like a backwards step in usability.
-
@idefix37 That's not the point. Before it was right on the side where the icons are now and you had the full screen and could access it directly. Now the selected map moves sideways too. You need to select the wanted part of the map again after opening the altitude slider.
-
@idefix37 If possible change to this please:
It would be more convenient if you have an altitude slider in this place, either horizontally or vertically, like it has been before. -
Yes, the new altitude slider location is NOT user friendly. It now requires two (2) mouse clicks to adjust the altitude view (one to open, then change the altitude on the slider, then another mouse click to close the selection window to go back to the main view). To have to repeat this to analyze winds, turbulence, and icing conditions over several altitudes for flight planning purposes has suddenly made this a tedious process for pilots.
Understandably, not everyone using Windy is looking at upper level conditions all the time. Maybe make this a switchable feature in the options. Or, when the "show airports" is selected, it puts the altitude slider back on the main view.

I will discuss it with colleagues if this can be changed and I will keep you posted by Monday.

@Suty Why the major downgrade to the premium windy? I understand the need to keep phone and computer apps similar for the casual user. But people paying for premium are mostly weather professionals or nerds and should be able to keep the older version that has everything accessible not buried in unlabeled sub menus. This is especially true of the altitude adjustment. I never used your phone app because of that issue. I am struggling to understand why I should continue to pay for windy other than the hourly model updates. Thank you.

Could the slider have a switch like choose between "keep altitude global for all layers" and "default to surface" ?
-
When setting the Altitude slider to any level aloft and then changing of layer, for instance from Wind to Temperature or Humidity, the slider is automatically back to Surface.
This needs to be fixed for weather specialists and aviators who are not constantly at ground level. May be this behaviour is useful for new users who forget they changed the altitude setting. -
@idefix37 You are right and I will report this to colleagues.
-
@Suty ✈ Maybe the text beside the plane could be "Altitude" at surface or the adjusted value else, in m, ft or FL?
-
Altitude slider will be adjusted so it will be functional without opened menu, it should be released in the next update.
-
@Suty I use Windy all the time to teach about Atmospheric Dynamics.
This last update broke a lot of the features that I loved, and the usability of the site has become much worse!
Besides the sliding altitude selector (which obviously must be on the map for direct access)... WHY the altitude is now reset everytime we change fields?
If we plot the winds at 200 hPa, then click on temperature (which also exists at 200 hPa), the site will reset the altitude and show the values at the surface. This is obviously the wrong thing to do. If the user is looking at 200 hPa, why reset to show the surface?
Can you please fix this?
Or at least add options in the configuration to change this?

@Jay-Withaflame
I am new to Windy, I have premium, but on the slider to change the altitude, it doesn't move it stays on Altitude: Surface, it looks like you can slide it, but you cant. Any help is appreciated.Mark

On A PC (in my case Windows OS), the keys "page up" and "page down" will allow you to ascend or descend through the vertical levels. I don't use the slider, I use the keyboard to skip through the levels.
