AROME altitude layers : a survey
-
Hi @Suty,
You see a strong demand for the 2.5km version of AROME over France and neighbours in order to get altitude parameters.
More than 30 posts in one day.Same as already provided in the Indian Ocean and the Antilles.
-
@idefix37 I already forwarded this thread to the product team. I will keep you posted.
-
UPDATE: It seems that the team approved the change. So it only takes now some time for developers to get to it and handle the change. Thank you for your patience.
-
@Suty Woohoo 🎉
That's so good to hear - we will make sure to share the info in the PG community when it is implemented.
There are many pilots flying the Alps that will use AROME.
Thanks to @Samygallego for submitting the idea and involving the community and thanks to the windy team for agreeing to use AROME 2.5!
-
@Suty Great, many thanks to the team, very reactive ! 🙂

Thanks for your post @Samygallego
I have had the same feedback from many paraglider pilots: AROME would be awesome.
PG pilots have little interest in surface conditions, what they are looking at to check the conditions is the sounding forecast - that's why many users complained about the v42 update when the plugin sounding stop working for a few days before I had time to update the plugin to the new API.
AROME covers the Alps where thousands of people are flying on good day. Here in France meteo-parapente.com is popuplar because it uses the AROME model but the UI is way less friendly than windy.
Please switch to AROME 2.5 🙏.
Windy is the best ❤️

Interested too! Very needed here in the Pyrenees :)

Hello the Windy team (and windy community),
first, congratulation and thank you for your work, very appreciated ! This post is not just another post asking for AROME altitude layers, it has been asked many times, see for example the following links for the most recent ones:
https://community.windy.com/topic/27058/arome-model-wind-informations-in-altitude
https://community.windy.com/topic/28241/altitude-winds-with-arome-model-france
https://community.windy.com/topic/32698/arome-suggestion-of-new-layersThe answer from the team is always the same : AROME1.3 is only available at surface, for the altitude Meteo-France gives only AROME2.5.
I would like to be sure that the team and everybody understand AROME1.3 and AROME2.5 are the SAME model (with a grid of 1.3km for calculation), only the output resolution is lowered (but still ok !), probably to save space and reduce data to be downloaded. I think not many people care of having so much precise resolution of 1.3km for visualization, but I am sure french paragliders and gliders pilots (and some of the neighbors, as spanish paragliders) would love to see altitude ! Especially in the Pyrenees where ICON D2 is not available, but also in the Alps for comparison with ICON D2.I have contacted the windy team and they say it is possible to replace AROME1.3 (at surface) by AROME2.5 (with Altitude) but they need to see there is a demand from the community.
I have also contacted Victor, creator of the excellent plugin "better sounding" and he would happily add the AROME model to the list if windy team is adding altitude.
So if you want this change, please make some noise (replying or liking this message) !
Many thanks.

@vicb Je suis d'accord avec Samy Gallego, on s'est mal compris ou me suis mal exprimé.... Il va de soi que les informations au sol et en altitude sont très importantes pour nous
-
@JohnMayan Je vote pour Johnny !!!!🤣
-
Hi @Samygallego, AROME1.3 has been replaced by AROME2.5 in the latest version:

@Filip_K Huge thank you to the team. Does that come will data @ different elevations?
-
Yes it does!
Awesome !!!

@vicb
Yes, it does. See the screenshot, intentionally from 850hPa level (: -
@Filip_K And great timing, there is a paragliding race this week in the pyrenees where ICON is not available!
