soundings , other methods than helium balloons

a quest for the insiders on meteorology science. do they use vertical ultrasound to search for windpatterns in the athmosphere? laser? infrared?

For the wind patterns at high levels there are scatterometer sensors in some meteorological satellites.

Last years MeteoSwiss made some experiments with meteodrones.
They can fly up to 6km (~470 hPa), continously measuring atmospheric data.
