No lightning on website
-
I've seen a few threads on this with people reporting they don't see lightning when opening the radar from a phone app, but I have the opposite problem, the lightning works fine on my android phone, but I haven't seen it appear in at least a few months when I use a computer and go to windy.com. Problem is happening on at least two different browsers (chrome, edge). I see the toggle and I turn it on and off and nothing happens.

@greenturtle116 Hi there, can you please check these browsers in anonymous windows?
-
@Suty forgive me, i'm not 100% sure what you mean by that? Are you asking if i'm using incognito mode or something like that? If that was the question, then no i'm not, its just a normal use of these browsers.
-
@greenturtle116 No, I would like you to test the opposite. Can you check this feature in the incognito mode?
-
I've noticed this, too, but I'm not sure if it's been intentionally done. I have tested it while logged in and also in incognito mode on the desktop and in the app.
Lightning used to be shown by a lightning symbol, a 'flash' when it occurred, and a noise. I no longer get the noise (even with sounds enabled) or the noticeable flash, and the lightning symbols are otherwise very easy to miss -- especially if zoomed out to a wide area, as the symbols become tiny.
Also, in times gone by, lightning strikes would leave a 'scorched earth' brown symbol behind for a while, so we can track the movement of storms over the ground. This seems to have also been removed, unhelpfully.
I appreciate the team's hard work on Windy, but as a long-term subscriber, I think the most recent 'improvements' have been anything but. It's a shame.

@Suty so I did try the site in incognito mode and it made no difference, but I did try using a different computer yesterday and it does work on the other computer, with the flash, the audible pop, the 'thunder' ring and the near past archive of strike locations. I have no idea what settings would be different between the two computers chrome browser - both were logged in as my google account with shared/saved settings and bookmarks across them.

@pilotmatt I'm noticing that depending on what computer i'm using the experience is different (my personal vs my partners personal vs my work computer) there must be some setting TBD in the browsers that are causing the strange behavior since its not universal for me.
-
@greenturtle116 Sometimes some installed addons can make this change. Our app is sensitive to small changes in the system settings.
-
@Suty I dont suppose you have any ideas what a likely culprit is?
-
@greenturtle116 It can be any optimization app or apps similar to adblock that changes the behavior of the browser. I would like to help you, but I am not sure.
