Tweaks to Radar+ for in flight nav aid
-
So, done some experimenting with RADAR+ in low level VFR flight in bad weather where there were isolated patches of TS moving through with the front, exactly the type of weather you aim to pick routes around as an aid and not obviously for any instrument flight.
In principle, it was actually very effective in real time once we set it to the forecast weather and we found it to navigate around clusters of TS based on the forecast. We were both surprised how accurate it was for something not aircraft based and had a few suggestions for a potential “In flight” mode that would make it very interesting even with the obvious disclaimers that it should not be construed as an equivalent to onboard Weather Radar etc…
1: When activated, automatically starts cycling the forecast imagery. At present, it seems the marker needs to be dragged from past weather to forecast to get it to recycle the weather you want which is a bit clunky in flight if you were single pilot.
2: Increase the size of the minute counter or put some time bars on the slider so it’s quicker to reference at a glance.
3: Map moves with location without having to manually drag to new position to keep current location in view. Still useful to be able to drag and look ahead/zoom etc but a button to zero back to location would be useful.
4: Have a longer projected direction indicator for current heading (like the time or distance indicator on skydemon for example). This would be very helpful as it provides extended reference of where the aircraft will be in conjunction to where the isolated weather is moving. I.e, aiming at a cluster that is travelling left to right knowing it will have passed by time the aircraft reaches that position.Hope this is something of any use going forward as so far, the app overall is by far the best I’ve used as a Heli pilot for giving a wide spectrum of visual weather representation for flight planning.
