There is a way to get global historical data from the GFS model.
It's from NOAA Archives: http://nomads.ncdc.noaa.gov/data/gfsanl/
And they are visualized with: http://www.zygrib.org/

Because the size of grib data is very big to download, I suggest (after the instalation of zygrib) to define a limited area (on the map) of your concern. So, the downloaded file will be relatively small.
