Option to use text list layer menu instead of thumbnails

Can you please provide a setting option to use a text list layer menu instead of thumbnails? This is how it used to be and it was much easier to scan the list. The thumbnails are pointless because they all look the same. And since each list item takes up more space and is arranged in a grid layout, it makes it much harder to find the layer I want. This is a UI anti-pattern, in my opinion. I understand if some people prefer thumbnails, which is why I think it should be an option in the settings. Thanks!
