Today forecast wind 5-6bft, was 8+ in the gulf of Patras
-
How can that be. I saw last night Wind from nort-east about 5bft, so I started 8:30 local time from Mesolongi and at 10 o‘clock it came strong wind up to six and I was continuing it camo up to 28-30 kn and then up to 40kn. I saw 41 on my instruments and the phenomenon at sea where more eight but than 6. it was not funny on a Saling boat. We couldn’t get across the gulf, waves up to 3 meters, a really big mess in the cabin. We where wet and we could get to Mesolongi, the way back wasn’t funny also.
How it can be such a big discrepancy, between 6 and 8?
Can I never trust windy again?

@Saliveros
I guess you only checked one weather model, the one of the ECMWF that is the default model in Windy.
But in areas with mountains surrounding the sea, it is useful to check higher resolution models. NEMS is the one with the highest resolution (4km) in your area.This is what it was showing this morning with my customized wind colors rated in Beaufort steps.
Orange is 6Bft
Red is 7BftWhen you talk about 40kt at your anemometer, was it probably max gusts ? So not 8 Beaufort which is the averaged wind over 10 minutes.

@Saliveros
According to the weather station located in Rio straits
https://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/rio/
the max gust was 55 km/hr (30 kts).

@Gkikas-LGPZ
And at this WX station the wind speed was reported at 33km/h = 18kt. This is force 5 in Beaufort scale, displayed in bright green on my map.
