Color shaded view on all zoom levels please.
-
Hi,
as sailors we are interested in the wind shade and speed, geographic features like cliffs and bays are also helpful, we don't need the additional shoreside info with roads and the like when zooming further in.
It would be much more helpful if one could keep the colour shade and associated map style also when zoomed in further
Essentially a tick box which allows us to zoom in without the swap to a more detailed map would be great.Maybe that's something you could implement relative easily?
Thanks,
Franziska

I don't think increasing the zoom level of the Wind layer would actually increase the granularity of the data provided by weather models. This granularity is determined by the model resolution. For example, Windy default model has a resolution of 9 km. This means that even at a very high zoom, you wouldn't be able to obtain more detail. It is like a low-resolution image: a greater zoom simply increases the pixel size.Furthermore, in weather models, the effect of relief on wind speed is calculated by taking into account its integrated topographic model. However, this topographic model is quite coarse and smooths out the relief. So, it cannot reveal more detail if you zoom in.

It's not about more details.
I only would like to see the colour shade when zoomed in.
I loose this when I zoom in on a bay.
-
Could you show a screenshot of this bay ?
-
It's not on a specific place, it's essentially everywhere.
If you zoom in you only see the wind animation, but not the colour overlay anymore.
I would like to see the colour overlay on any zoom level.I'd love to add a screenshot, but don't see an option here to attach one.

To show screenshots in the message window
1 On phone you might need to swipe these buttons to the left to make the RH ones visible.
2 Click on this button to add a screenshot. If you zoom in you only see the wind animation, but not the colour overlay anymore.
I would like to see the colour overlay on any zoom level.I know that we see only the wind animation at high zoom level. But you would not get more information about wind speed and direction at this high zoom level.

@idefix37
This is showing the colour overlay.
Exactly what I like to see also when zoomed in further.
This is zoomed further in. The colour overlay is gone.
But a lot of unneeded clutter added on land. -
You can click on “Aerial” to replace the map details by a satellite view.
Anyway if it was possible to zoom in keeping the wind layer colors it would be uniformly amber as in your first screenshot. -
@idefix37 it won't be uniformly amber when you slide the time slider. That's the whole point why I would like to have the coloured overlay and not only the wind animation.
Satellite view makes it worse. The outline of the zoomed out view is perfect, it's just ashame it gets replaced when zoomed in.

I agree with @Lady-Rover. I'd like to describe the problem from my personal perspective.
- The color shade encodes some variables (let's say
Thermals
) that are not visible in the time series view. To see certain variables, we have to see the color shade. - The maximum zoom level at which the color shade is still visible is often too coarse to recognize and/or set a particular location of interest. Therefore, while search or setting a specific location, we typically lack info on some relevant variables.
While @idefix37's resolution argument is entirely valid, the loss of the color overlay still causes some annoyances:
- Functional/UX/UI: To see both the forecast and the color shade for a precise location, we have to first zoom in and then zoom out again. In desktop view, that's not a big deal because we can pin a location on the map. On mobile, however, it's super annoying, because we have to carefully zoom out again keeping the location of interest in the crosshair to not mess up our forecast (which btw might have a finer resolution than the color overlay...). Sometimes the zooming even glitches, throwing me off the desired location completely and forcing me to pan and zoom again.
- Visual: The color scheme of the detailed map is completely different from the color scheme of the overlay (which you allow us to configure down to the finest details). Hence, it is impossible to set a pleasant color scheme for high-ish zoom levels. Also note that the affected zoom levels are not even unusual but most typical for activities like biking, gliding, hiking, sailing, etc...
Thus, it would be awesome if we could configure Windy to always show the color overlay. For me, this would be a tremendous UI improvement.
