How to Plan Outdoor Routes and Why GPX Files Are Your Best Friend
-
@Sophia-V-Q-Stoltz How do we use it with google maps?
-
@tabbishmahmood
There is no way to use the Windy Route planner on Google map.
Windy already integrates a base map available when zooming in. -
I appreciate you added this feature, I would just recommend to make it easier to use by adding "Import GPX" as an option on the first popup (like Add waypoint etc.)
-
It would be great if it would be possible to zoom in the weather forecast Cloud layers and that like in order to see a little bit more

@bpetri
I don't know which weather model you are using, but for example, the ECMWF model has a resolution of 9 km. So even zooming in further on the Cloud layer won't give you more detail. -
I do not understand how to import a GPX file. The YouTube clip miss out details. I can not see what is been done

I guess you are using the Route planner in the mobile app, because on the browser version it is quite obvious : opening Distance&planning from the menu, you have directly the possibility to import a GPX file.In the mobile app, it is more tricky. After pressing the screen, select Distance&planning from the top banner. Then start plotting a route: from any location, move the map to create a fictive route. Select a mobile (boat, plane, etc.).
At this point, click on the 3 dots (More) in the bottom right corner of the screen to open a pop-up window.Clicking on Import GPX replace the previous route with the GPX file.
It is what is shown in the video clip after plotting a first route.
If you want to use the GPX route again in future, it is better to save the route to your Favorites at bottom of the pop-up window. You will get it back easily from your list of Favorites just by clicking it.

I've imported a gpx however it is not clear to me what i am looking at. Is 19:00 the start time? And do i view the predictions at different waypoints bij scrolling the bottom part left and right? Because the bottom doesn't scroll untill the first an the last waypoints line up with the dotted line below 19:00. -

To get the weather forecast along your passage, you need to fill the speed field. OK you did it, it’s showing 6kt.
But in addition you have to turn ON the Speed switch otherwise you are getting the weather only at departure time. -
