Islands showing as water?
-
How can I report map issues where a couple of large islands near me are showing as water? I would think it actually should impact the modelling.

@Jacob-Kennedy
What are these islands? -
@Jacob-Kennedy Hello, we recommend suggesting any changes to OpenStreetMap directly - you can see the topic here.
Unfortunately, there is not much we can do about it. Still, technically speaking, you are correct that the islands will undoubtedly have an impact on various layers, including currents and local wind patterns.
Have a sunny day,

I don't think this has any impact on the modeling, because the weather models are computed by the weather centers, not by Windy. Their models use their own built-in map, which is not the same as the one presented in Windy.
What are these islands and where are they located ? -
@idefix37 You are right. We cannot guarantee that forecasted layers will display these changes. With my previous idea, I was highlighting the actual physical impact of the islands on local conditions. Thanks for the clarification!

@idefix37 Parry Island and Sandy Island near Parry Sound, on Georgian Bay

In fact, most of the islands near me show as water, and they significantly impact wave size and wind for my daily boating and fishing. -
@NikiD Unfortunately the islands clearly show as land on OpenStreetMap. Somehow it seems to be a colouring or overlay issue in Windy?

@Jacob-Kennedy
Yes, it is just a question of colouring. If you zoom in till the base map, you see that the land is there in Windy.I'm quite sure this issue can be resolved by the developers.
Waves should not be displayed over these islands, but displaying water over islands has no impact on nearby wave forecasts. The resolution is 9 km, and the tiles of this layer partially cover land everywhere. Windy performs the precise cropping based on the coastline contour.
See an example with a wave model over Lake Michigan. This model has a 28km resolution.This is how the raw model data is transformed for visualization in Windy. Then smoothing the tiles is the last step.
You can see that I left the small islands in northern part of the lake covered by the wave layer :)
