Three things that appear when selecting ECMWF or ICON-D2 and the switching to wind-mode (using Windy in browser):

When selecting ECMWF, I can see about 6 days into the future. I also see data from ICON-D2 for about 4 days into the future. When I move the time-slider for 4 days into the future, the wind-barb for ICON-D2 keeps updating until the end of these four forecasted days.

When selecting ICON-D2, the shown wind data goes only 4 days into the future. Data from models with a longer forecast duration is truncated after 4 days. When I move the time-slider, I can only do so for up to 2 days into the future, I can not move the time-slider further to tthe right into day 3 or 4.

Also when selecting ICON-D2, after about two days into the future, for all shown models there is a note "ICON-EU" shown in the wind data. This note does not appear when selecting ECMWF.

Why is that? This was different for older versions, the current version is much worse than the old approach.

@Ftjwinfs Hi, not yet. In Wind mode, switching between models is not intended, since all of them are visualized anyway. This product is therefore optimized for global models (ECMWF, GFS). Display issues still occur with regional models. I'll let you know if anything changes.

@Jari-Sochorová said in Wind-data for ECMWF vs. ICON-D2: Shown forecast data truncated and other hick-ups:

Hi Jari, sorry to be a little bit blunt, but this makes no sense. Yes, all wind data is visualized at the bottom of the screen. But only for the selected location. And as a user I want to be able to quickly switch the wind model to see the prognosis for different models on a regional level, i.e. on the map.

To be a bit more specific: A a sailor and paying user I need to get an understanding of the weather over a range of up to 200km/100nm. To do that, it is necessary that it is easily possible to visualize the wind prognosis from different models on the map.

Reading "switching between models is not intended" is like a punch in the face, since exactly this was easily possible for years. Why do you guys think, this should not be possible anymore?

Please excuse my harsh words. But I do not have any understanding for this.

@Ftjwinfs Hi, you're absolutely right, this is an unfortunate bug. I'll report it to the Windy team again and let you know once it's resolved. Apologies for the inconvenience. Jari

@Ftjwinfs I am sorry about the delay of our team. I see two major issues that I replicated on my end:

                  • shorter point forecasts when ICON-D2 is displayed
                  • ICON-EU extension for all available models

Regarding to the shorter ICON-D2 visualization, it is related to shorter map data from this model, despite longer point forecast data.

@Suty Thank you for your thoughts! Also, I strongly recommend to again allow users to directly switch wind models, when in wind model.

You write "Regarding to the shorter ICON-D2 visualization, it is related to shorter map data from this model, despite longer point forecast data".
Understood! Still for me as a sailor it is of very high value, to see the complete data of other models along the lower part of the screen.
What I would suggest: When in ICON-D2, please still show all data that is available for other models. When moving the slider, obviously limit the slider position to the max extent of ICON-D2 (in case ICON is selected).
By that I would be able to show ICON-D2 on the map, and still by looking at the lower part of the screen see what other models forecast for the future that lies beyond the extent of ICON-D2.

What I see as very strong point of Windy and why a couple of years I came to windy, is the availability of many models. But for me you really destroy my user experience when you limit model data or make it complicated to switch between models. Please do not do this! All this was better in the past ;)

@Ftjwinfs Availability of switching models will be back in v47, hopefully, with the rest of mentioned issues.
