Hurricane/Cyclone Tracking in Route Planner – Essential for Mariners
-
Dear Windy Team & Community,
As a Merchant Vessel Captain, I rely on Windy daily for weather routing and storm avoidance. The app’s visualization tools are outstanding, but one feature could make it even more powerful for maritime users: integrating hurricane/cyclone tracking directly into the route planning interface.
Why this matters:
Currently, we cross-check storm forecasts (NOAA/JTWC) separately, then manually adjust routes—a time-consuming process.
Overlaying projected hurricane paths, cones of uncertainty, and intensity data onto the route planner would allow proactive decision-making, improving safety and efficiency.
This is critical for long ocean passages where even small course changes have major fuel and timeline implications.
Suggested Implementation:
A toggle in the route planner to display active tropical systems (with forecast tracks).
Option to show confidence cones and predicted wind/sea conditions along the storm’s path.
Compatibility with standard maritime data sources (e.g., NHC, JTWC).
Many mariners (commercial and recreational) use Windy—this would elevate it from a weather tool to a full voyage-planning solution. I’d love to hear if this is feasible or if others in the community share this need.
Fair winds.

Hi Capt’n
I’m not sailing in areas where tropical cyclones occur, but I find the idea very interesting.
You mention the JTWC track forecast but it has not been implemented despite this topic

@idefix37
Thank you so much. Nice that you found my idea interesting.
Hope community will help this issue.
