Sea water temperature reported accuracy
-
Dear Windy team,
Congratulations for a professional weather app, been using it confidently.
Alas, kindly be notified of the highly erroneous difference in your displayed Sea water temperature and its real temperature. At the time of writing in my present location Black Sea, Romania, Constanta, your displayed Sea water temperature is showing 24C, but realistically there is nobody swimming as it is about 15C. This difference has been noticed many times before, in other locations as well.
Not to mention that Sea water temp highly influencences weather prediction pattern.
As I'm confident my notice interests al parties concerned, looking forward for its positive resolve
Thank you! -
@dewan1 Hi, thank you for bringing this discrepancy to our attention.
If you could provide a link to any reliable measurement, for example, from the Romanian Meteorological Service, it would be very helpful to us.I’ve looked up sea surface temperature data for the Black Sea from various sources, and most currently report values around 24 °C.
For example, temperature derived from Metop satellite data:
https://osi-saf.eumetsat.int/low-and-mid-latitudes-processing-center/charts-displayOr data from the German Meteorological Service (DWD):
https://www.dwd.de/EN/ourservices/seawatertemperature/seawatertemperature.htmlOn Windy, we display sea surface temperature based on the ECMWF numerical model:
https://charts.ecmwf.int/products/w_sst?area=Europe&base_time=202507230000&level=sst&valid_time=202507230000Of course, the actual temperature near the coast may differ, in the immediate coastal zone, it can be affected by shoreline shape, seafloor topography, wind, waves, or freshwater inflow from rivers.
Thank you for using our app. We truly appreciate your feedback.
Best regards, Jari
