Wind-mode: Wrong data shown on map when selecting e.g. ICON
-
For the browser-version v46.1 the data shown on the map and the tabulated wind-data are inconsistent when selecting e.g. ICON.
When I go to "Basic"-mode and select either ECMWF or ICON, the map correctly changes and shows e.g. the ICON-data on the map.
But when I then leave ICON as selected model and switch to "wind-mode", the map automatically switches to ECMWF, although the selected weather model still is ICON.
This becomes obvious for situations, where the models show big differences, see attached screenshots.
Obviously, when I select a certain model, I want to see its data on the map. For older versions of Windy this worked just fine.
Guys. Please finally start to do proper testing.

It’s not just the browser or ICON. My screenshot of the app on an iPad (Version 46.0.4) shows the none of the wind vectors match what is shown in the tables below and neither do any of them match the “particles animation” shown on the screen. The “Display as Wind” view is garbage!

@jkuiken Your issue is not related right now to this thread, the your bug is already solved, only mobile apps are waiting for the fix now.

@Ftjwinfs This wasn't about wrong testing. Our colleagues from dev team decided this way after issues, we had in the last version with the detail.
Right now ECMWF is default for the Wind detail, because if you open the Wind visualization you want to compare various forecasts with each other. If you want to have the map and detail on the same level, you can use any other tabs in the detail. -
You write: "... if you open the Wind visualization you want to compare various forecasts with each other"
This is a very absolute statement. Why then showing the map at all in wind-mode? The user might want something different, ie., he wants to use the wind-mode as it was possible before: Comparing tabulated data AND switching between data from different models shown on map.
When using wind mode as a sailor, I do not want to check how windy it gets during bbq in my "garden at home". But I need to get a bigger picture of the weather situation over a range of tens of kilometers. For that, I need to be able to quickly change the data shown on the map, while at the same time seeing the tabulated wind-data from all models.
You write: "If you want to have the map and detail on the same level, you can use any other tabs in the detail."
But without the direct comparison of the models via the tabulated wind data. Showing both, map and tabulated wind-data and easily comparing / switching models was the killer feature that brought me to Windy. If this gets degraded, I'm gone.
How I see the situation:
At the moment the user selects a certain model and then switches to wind-mode. The selected model is still highlighted at the lower part of the screen. This implies to the user (who knows the old functionality of Windy), that the data currently shown on the map comes from the selected model, while internally Windy switches back to ECMWF without ANY notice.
Only in situations where the selected model differs significantly from ECMWF the user can see, that the map does not show data from the model he selected but something else (=ECMWF). This is strongly misleading for more subtle differences between models. Is the current behavior a temporary "solution" and it will be fixed so that the wind-mode works as before? I strongly suggest to do so.

@Suty What are the plans at Windy regarding this issue?
-
@Ftjwinfs For now, we decided to stay with this setup we have now. However, we will monitor the feedback.
-
@Suty That's not good to hear. I see it as a clear downgrade of the functionality of Windy. Hard to understand.
To better understand the reasons for this design decision: In what terms does the team at WIndy see it as as positive, to suppress the selection of wind-data on the map from different models when in wind-mode?

I just saw the latest update. The issue is still there. I select a certain model in Basic mode (e.g. ICON) and see the wind-data on the map. Then I switch to Wind-mode, Windy still shows "ICON" in the footers, but automatically switches to ECMWF on the map.
Why has this not been solved yet? When will it be solved?

-
@Ftjwinfs I think it will be completely reconsidered in upcoming days and it will be probably added back.
-
@Suty Thank you for the reply.
Have a good weekend.
