Wind and clouds move in opposite directions for Philippines?
-
I use Windy to track storms that are coming my way here in the Visayas in the central Philippines. The infrared satellite view with its the lighting detector seems most useful as it seems to show high thunderheads well.
During the summer monsoon, the winds are from southwest to northeast. Yet the clouds always seem to flow the opposite direction! That is, from northeast to southwest, against the wind.
What's going on with this? I'm originally from the San Francisco Bay Area and the winds and rain had another pattern from cold fronts from the northwest.
What's going on here in the tropics? Or is this some quirk of Windy?

@Somsel
How do you check the wind in the Satellite layer?
By the Reported wind ? It displays the wind observed by weather stations near the ground.
Clouds are pushed by the winds at much higher levels. It is therefore better to monitor them by checking Radiosonde. One station is located in the Philippines.
Note in this example that the surface wind is opposite the wind at altitude.
If there is no Radiosonde station, you can use Sounding forecasts (right-click on mouse). You can have a look at Airgram panel in the detailed forecast table. -
