      Surely that would be a user discretion issue rather than yours? To avoid confusion, you could add an option to 'allow up to X layers' in the settings. That way, you can set the default to what you believe is reasonable for entry users, and then if someone has increased it, they'll be aware why their map is so 'thick'!

      Obviously layers which use the temperature gradient can't overlay, but clouds, rain, wind, a temperature-based layer, hurricanes and other icon/graphic based layers all could.

        You want to superimpose several layers, such as Wind, Clouds, Rain… The result would be very poor, because all the colors would be mixed. The only solution would be to use several isolines and/or graphic symbols on an existing colored layer. But not several colored layers superimposed.
