Request to disable asking GPS Permission on Android
-
Hello, I have been a subscriber since 2023 and I would like to request you to stop the app from requesting GPS position on Android everytimes I open the app or navigate? I only use the app to check a few specific areas on the map and this make it very annoying. I think i will give Ventusky a try if this keep going on.
Thank you, -
@knthanh Okay, so despite having the GPS for Windy off, the app still asks you? Can you share the app screenshot with this message?
-
@Suty No I don't want to use GPS for windy and I prefer to keep my GPS off. The app keep request for GPS permission when the app open, use layer weather radar, and satellite layer every single time. I would like it to stop asking all together.

@Suty
Same problem here. I also keep GPS positioning turned off on my android phone most of the time. When I start the Windy app, there is a request for GPS positioning. And every time I switch layers, for example from satellite to weather radar, the request shows up again. Very annoying.

The error console shows:

Error console just showed the following report for the first time:

And just like Tob145 reported, the setting "determine by my IP" stays the same, no matter what I try to select.

In addition to the popup, I also have a permanent warning icon flashing all the time. Very annoying.
All this happens despite having start location set to a fixed location (not GPS, not IP). When closing and reopening the settings, startup location always shows "By IP" as others reported, though it in fact uses the fixed location I set previously, so this seems more like an issue with the settings display rather than the actual settings value.

-
@wint Hello, when you close this message, does it still reappear every time when you open the menu, or app?
-
@Suty With the last update (build 2025-12-04 23:31) the flashing icon and warning seem to be gone. Only the misleading setting remains:
When closing and reopening the settings, startup location always shows "By IP" as others reported, though it in fact uses the fixed location I set previously, so this seems more like an issue with the settings display rather than the actual settings value.
