New radar overlay displaying snowfall
-
@Filip_K
The new layer displaying snowfall on the radar map in the browser version is a fantastic addition!
How do you retrieve this data? I know that snow and other solid precipitation are highlighted by dual polarization of the radar signal. But do all weather radars provide this type of data, or if it's missing, do you make an estimate based on forecast temperatures?
Then I think it would be wise to allow users to disable this layer; otherwise, we'll have a lot of complaints from some users as usual. -
@idefix37
I can't look at it. It messes with my vision. Now I have to look at other weather radar sites until this is an option I can turn off and if it isn't, I'll cancel. They keep 'upgrading' and I'm not a fan. I thought it was a glitch and kept refreshing hoping it would be corrected. I was wrong. -
The way snow is displayed on the Weather radar layer is identical to the way snow is displayed on the Rain, thunder layer.

This feature (radar showing snow) has been requested by many users for a long time. So those who criticize this new overlay don't care whether it's snowing or raining, yet it has a significant impact on daily life. Very strange to me.

Loving it!
I know I am asking for way to much - but can we get the other types of precipitation added...
No rush, I am more than content with this

@Kwain The snow icons make the radar image unusable. This needs to go away fast!!
-
What's wrong with it? How is it unusable?
-
It is unusable because it makes it very difficult to distinguish the different colors, especially when it comes to spotting banding which indicates local heavy snow falls. I am glad some like it, but it should at least be toggle-able for those of us who want to clearly see the different levels of reflectivity.

@idefix37 I am one that needs freezing rain and sleet to be differentiated on radar. It is great to see the effort but I think it is much clearer to not use symbols and use a colour scale like the Weather Network in Canada uses. see the images below of the comparison.

@Filip_K
Thanks Filip, that confirms my guess -
@idefix37 Not sure why you think it's so strange. In many parts of the world (including where I am), if it's -15C it probably isin't raining ... and for the verge temps around -2C to 2C, it's not going to be that accurate.
The snow overlay to me looks like something a child would do.
I can only make one vote, but I won't renew if this overlay can't be toggled. -
Hello, is it coming for the app also? Thanks
-
Would be on the app soon?
