Wave power kW/m. New parameter in wave forecast?
-
Hi,
I noticed on Web that the Waves & Tide section has been cleaned up and do not include models that don't have wave prediction anymore.
There is also a new parameter: Wave power in kW/m. How should this be interpreted? It differs from other forecast sites which states wave power in Kilojoule.
I can not find any announcements of this feature.

See what this parameter means

Thank you. Am I correct that this is a newly added parameter for Windy? I can not see it in the mobile, IOS version yet.

@pheur
Yes it’s new, only available in the browser version, not yet in the mobile app. Probably in the next update. -

To clarify the concepts of wave energy and wave power, note that wave power depends on wave energy and wave speed.- Wave energy is proportional to the square of the wave height and is expressed in kJ.
- Wave power is related to the product of wave energy x wave speed.
- Long-period waves propagate faster and are therefore more powerful.
- Wave power is expressed in kW per meter of wave crest.
It is why wave power “can be estimated from the mean wave period and the significant wave height” as said in the link to ECMWF parameter I provided here above.
