Most inaccurate forecasted conditions I’ve ever seen
-
Dear Windy Weather,
Just a quick note to congratulate you on one of the boldest creative writing efforts of the 2025 Sydney to Hobart.
I assume this was measured somewhere inland, behind a pub, with the anemometer wrapped in a towel.
Because out on the river, what we actually received was a fully rigged Comanche cruising past like she’d missed a gear change, doing 20+ knots and looking suspiciously comfortable for a forecasted fleet of maxis supposedly sailing in a drifting competition.
If this was a tactical attempt to make the Hobart finish more exciting, well played. If not, I’d like to suggest recalibrating whatever model interprets “1kt” as “hold on to your hat and your rating.”
To be clear, I don’t expect perfection. Sailing is sailing. But when your app says “1kt,” and the reality is Comanche blasting through like it’s her day job (which, admittedly, it is), something has gone seriously sideways in the weather room.
In summary:
• Forecast: drifting
• Reality: apparent wind screaming, boats lit up, egos deflated
• Result: Windy owes us a beer, minimumYours in disbelief,
Disappointed Scallywags -
Did you know that Windy doesn't make forecasts?
Windy only displays forecasts from several global and regional weather models.
Have you looked at all these models, especially those from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), and decided which ones are most relevant to your region? Or do you use only the default model?
For Sydney-Hobart race Windy provides 2 local models ACCESS C-SY and ACCESS C-VT which cover this race with a 1.5km resolution! Did you use them ?
