Feature Request: Add "Sunshine Accumulation" Layer
-
Hi Windy team,
I am a long-time user and I love the app. I would like to suggest a new map layer: Sunshine Accumulation.
Similar to the "Rain accumulation" layer, which shows total precipitation over a specific period, this layer would display the total duration of sunshine (hours/minutes) for a selected timeframe (e.g., the next 24h, 3 days, or the upcoming weekend).
Why it would be useful:
- Trip Planning: Easily identifying the sunniest regions for weekend outdoor activities.
- Solar Energy: Helping solar panel owners estimate potential energy yield (e.g. next 3 days).
- Health & Safety: Assisting people with sensitive skin or sun allergies in choosing safer locations.
Currently, one has to check specific points individually, but a global heat map of "sunshine hours" would be a game-changer for planning.
What do you think?

asking a question out of curiosity.... Where do you find it for specific points at the minute?

But this has my support. there is already a layer for W/m2 which could be helpful. My only concern is that I don't think models output this layer, but I could be totally wrong. (@idefix37?)

That's what I mean. I don't think that ECMWF or ICON output a sunshine layer, with the units of Sunshine Hours

@WeatherMan10
That's what I mean. How does Windy manage to display a layer with hourly variation in sunshine power?
And how does ECMWF show this map featuring “sunshine duration, last 24h”. -
@idefix37
Great map (ECMWF - Sunshine duration), this is exactly what I meant and want in Windy. :-)
And I am not alone - I found multiple threads begging for this feature:- https://community.windy.com/topic/15400/sunshine-hours
- https://community.windy.com/topic/21964/sunshine-map
- https://community.windy.com/topic/31729/display-duration-of-sunshine
However, these threads are mostly misunderstood and discarded...
