Imd internal radar data suggestion
-
Hi @HardikP, thank you, I noticed your message in the other thread as well, so no need to repeat yourself.
We'll try to get in touch with MoES. -
@Filip_K plz Send a short, formal message framing radar access as a controlled pilot to improve early warnings and public safety.
Don’t: Ask for “open data” or compare India to the US — that language will shut the conversation down immediately that's how my friend got black listed
He wanted radar archive of 2018 classic supercell
Everything was going well then they asked him why should we give you the data what is the advantage for us and he said you should give the archive data because usa public archives then they just denied him
Moes have a big ego if you hurt it they will Blacklist you
He should have said that the archive data Good help in supercell research in India and can help the farmers early warning system please please take this advise -
@HardikP
Great, thanks for more info. It looks like you have quite a lot of experience with this topic. Do you have any recommendation as to who should we try to contact at MoES? -
@Filip_K Windy should contact the Ministry of Earth Sciences directly, mainly the ESSO and officials handling weather observation programs, since they manage radar upgrades and data-sharing decisions. IMD mostly handles daily operations and usually cannot approve outside data access. The message should focus on helping public weather awareness and cooperation, not on asking for internal data or criticizing IMD.
MoES contact emails:
secretary@moes.gov.in
js(atmosphere)@moes.gov.in
contact@moes.gov.in Windy can also try contacting additional MoES channels like esso@moes.gov.in, admn@moes.gov.in, and itcell@moes.gov.in, as these departments often handle technical coordination, administrative routing, and digital data systems related to weather observation programs. Reaching out to a few relevant MoES departments together usually increases the chances of the message being forwarded to the correct officials. -
@HardikP
Perfect! Will do so and I'll keep you updated.
Thank you very much for all the detailed information. -
@Filip_K thanks by the way what happened to the IMD warning problem that I have talked about
-
@HardikP
I checked IMD's official feed and it is broken and empty. See the other thread. -
@Filip_K Again didn't want to create another post, I've just noted that the whole Indian radars are offline, and this includes Bangladesh coverage... Is there a rason why for Bangladesh you rely solely on Indian radars and don't use the Bangladeshi radars instead? (https://radar.bmd.gov.bd/?site=dhaka)

It sounds like you’ve done a lot of digging and figured out the right approach. In India, radar data is controlled by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, not IMD directly, so going through MoES is the proper channel. Framing the request as controlled data use for public safety—through NDMA or research institutions like IITs or IISc—makes it more likely to succeed. Generic emails to IMD or local offices usually don’t get responses. Having the right contacts at MoES can save a lot of time and make the process much smoother.
