Request model surface elevation field
-
Hi Windy Team,
I want to place a request for the addition of the topography height charts for the available NWP models in Windy.
In the case of ECMWF - "Orography and sea depth"

and GFS

etcMy reason.... snow forecasting for the Alpine regions and knowing what the model surface elevation is when determining surface temperature etc. I know the Meteogram shows Real and Model elevations, though it would be easier to view the broader region from a map.
Thx.

And just to further highlight the difference between model and actual orography for the Australian Alpine region.......
Actual elevations (white is >2000m)

GFS orography

EC orography

Icon orography

So just be AWARE of potential differences in forecast model surface temps to likely surface temps in complex terrain (highly mountainous regions).
Compare with model height (900/850/800hpa) temps! -

As you know, for mountain temperature forecasts, it is recommended to use high-resolution models whenever possible.
However, in Windy, it is preferable to use the Meteoblue model for a specific location. This non-gridded model, developed in Switzerland, does not provide data for map displays, but it uses the actual elevation of the location to estimate the temperature for point forecasts. So it is only available in Basic detailed forecast.
But I agree model orography maps for each model would useful.
