Australian airport METARs - only major airport coverage
-
Hello Windy,
Is there a reason why only the major Australian airports appear to have METARs in Windy? Our national Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) publishes human readable METARs here -> https://www.bom.gov.au/aviation/observations/metar-speci/ which covers both major and regional airports.
An example of an Australian airport in Windy not having a METAR is Bankstown (YSBK) which is a busy GA airport.
Of course there may be limitations with the data flows from upstream data providers - but hopefully METARs for more Australian airports can be added.

@dugeem Hello, we use different source as providers for airport data, so they are probably sent by these used ones.
-
@Suty Thanks for the reply. Are you able to indicate where the data is sourced from? I’m quite happy to ask the same question to upstream providers
-
@dugeem We basically use data from NOAA.
-
@Suty Thanks!

Thanks to Austin @ NOAA AWC who confirmed that some national weather providers only include data for the major airports. Next I'll check in with local Australian Bureau of Meteorology to check current policy.
Meanwhile Austin did note that the new Western Sydney International airport has been added (link https://aviationweather.gov/data/metar/?ids=YSWS)
@suty Whilst a location search for Western Sydney International works - it returns the wrong IATA & ICAO codes (should be WSI & YSWS respectively) and no data. Hopefully this can be fixed in the Windy backend :-)

Bump
@suty Any chance the METAR for WSI / YSWS can be fixed to link to NOAA data?
-
@dugeem Unfortunately, I don't have this information or any way how to get this information. I am sorry about it.
-
@Suty Thanks I understand the complexity of attempting to fix a single data point. Anyway after some more sleuthing I noticed that the same mistake occurs in the open source airportmap DB (https://github.com/komed3/airportmap) which I guessed may be used by Windy.
The maintainer of airportmap (Paul) has kindly corrected the issue - hopefully in the next day or three the fix will flow thru to Windy.
