Is model resolution important?

  • Yes, it is very important. Some local phenomena can not be forecasted by coarse model.

Following pictures show differences between ECMWF and GFS forecasts for Canarian islands.

Wind pattern is affected by the shape of mountains. This effect is not caught by coarse model.

Similar problems occur in forecasts of convective storms or disputed maximum wind velocity in hurricanes.

    ECMWF model (approx 9km resolution)

    GFS model (approx 22km resolution)

I am so happy that not only me is doing docs :-). Thomas use '##' in markdown to make font bigger and img alt atribute [_center] to center imgs in HTML. CSS is styled that.
