On August 26, a flash-flood disaster occurred in Nepal, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Events like this raise an important question for Windy users:
How can we use Windy to identify the risk of flash floods early enough to protect lives and property?
Does the current Windy app provide a specific layer, feature, or warning system that can help users detect a potential flash-flood risk before it becomes dangerous? If so, which layer or tool should we use, and how should we interpret it?
I know that Windy already provides useful tools such as Weather Warnings, Radar, Rain & Thunder, and Rain Accumulation. Windy itself recommends using radar for monitoring current conditions and rain accumulation for flood situations.
However, I am specifically asking about flash-flood early warning — something that could clearly tell an ordinary user that the combination of forecast rainfall, rainfall intensity, terrain, rivers, and other factors may create a dangerous flash-flood risk in their area.
If such a feature does not currently exist, could Windy consider developing a dedicated Flash Flood Risk / Early Warning layer in the future?
For example, it could provide an easy-to-understand warning such as:
🔴 Extreme flash-flood risk
🟠 High risk
🟡 Moderate risk
🟢 Low riskIdeally, it could also provide an alert several hours in advance, allowing people to move to safer locations and protect their families, homes, livestock, and property.
Windy says that its forecasts and warnings can help people prepare for dangerous weather and protect lives. I would really like to understand how we can make the best use of Windy specifically for flash-flood situations.
Could someone from Windy or an experienced Windy user please explain:
- Which existing layers should we monitor for flash-flood risk?
- Can Windy currently provide an early warning specifically for flash floods?
- How far in advance can Windy realistically indicate a potential flash-flood situation?
- If a dedicated flash-flood warning layer does not exist, is Windy considering developing one in the future?
This could be an extremely valuable life-saving feature, especially in areas vulnerable to monsoon rainfall and flash floods.
