Predictability percentage disappears on Android (51.1.2)
-
Hello! When the new predictablity values were introduced, there was a text based percentage sign for every day. Now the Android app initially shows the actual percentage for a few seconds, but then it collapses into a colored dot, which is only green/yellow/red. This gives a lot less information than actual percentages.
On the web at least I can mouse over the dot and it gives me the percentage (still far from ideal), but on Android there is no way to access the information, apart from scrolling very quickly around the predictions, before they collapse into a dot after a few seconds. This seems like a bug.
If you want to avoid visual clutter, at least make it clickable to expand it. Or make it an option to have it remain expanded all the time.

@windyati Hello and thank you for your feedback. We are aware of this change and we are still not sure about the final solution so we will wait for more feedback from our users about this.

I'd echo this feedback. Being (partially) colourblind, if I miss the percentage, or scroll back, I can't see the predictability at all (the colours being useless for me). I need to exit, then reopen to see them again briefly. Please do not communicate information using colour alone :) this is common accessibility practice.

I'm having the same problem (Motorola edge50neo). Any updates on a fix already?

@Cossym @markhelifreak Hello and thank you for the feedback, I will discuss this topic with our colleagues on our next meeting.
-
@windyati Thanks for starting this thread. I’m having the same behavior on IPhone windy app (v 51.1.2). I first see a value for predictability then it turns into a color dot (3 stop light colors) with no information and not clickable.
-
@neaptide Unfortunately, color dots will stay as the permanent solution to keep the interface as simple as it is possible with all provided information in Windy.
However, regarding to the issue with the color blindness, we will respect the device setup in our mobile app, and if there is any issue, we will provide percentage to these users.

@Suty I have further recommendation for removing visual clutter, so please consider the following improvements to your app as well:
- please remove all the temperature readings in degrees and replace them with a similar system, where green is a "nice" temperature according to your designer, yellow is "ok" and "red" is either too hot or too cold.
- obviously you can remove the "feels like" temperature after this improvement, to keep the interface as simple as possible
- same goes for the wind reading in numbers, if you check my screenshot above, it makes the screen extremely cluttered. I recommend a face blowing air with its cheeks being variously colored based on how hard the emoji is blowing air.
- wind gusts can be symbolized by the face shaking based on how gusty it is.
I am available for consultation on a per hour basis if you need further improvements for the interface, as I can see your designer is really unambitious about removing visual clutter. And all we really want from Windy is just a soothing interface without overwhelming us with information.
Ultimately I hope we can get to a state where the app can tell me how I should feel about the weather by using colors alone.
/sarcasm over
As silly as this sounds, this is really what you're saying with your update and it makes me scratch my head. First you (Windy) make a huge deal out of predictability as the new feature for 51.x, hype everybody up how useful this information is, then practically reduce it to yes/maybe/no, instead of a more granular percentage.
As somebody who obviously cares enough about weather forecast to pay for it, I'm seeing less and less the value proposition compared to the Google Weather app that comes with my phone for free. It gives me probabilities for rain in 5% increments per hour, while windy is often confidently wrong in its predictions.
This predictability partially addressed this issue, and now this design change took away most of the benefits gained. I'm getting confused what I am really paying a premium for, if your goal is to remove useful information from your users that you previously provided to please some designers.
This app is for data nerds, who want all the information, and are willing to scroll through and compare 10 different prediction models to squeeze a little bit more clue out of them about what's likely to happen. Removing predictability percentages to make your app less cluttered is like trying to remove buttons in an airliner's cockpit to make it more soothing for the pilots. Completely misses the point for who's using your product.

@windyati Despite the fact, that I agree in certain facts with you, this was decided on our end.
-
@Suty All right, I won't shoot the messenger, thanks for conveying the decision.
What's weird is that the data is there it just set to disappear by a script that hides this, which could be disabled with a simple option added to the user settings.
However with the finality of this decision to remove useful information, I guess all I can do is to add this fact to the pile of pros and cons for renewing my subscription this year. Seems like I'm not the target audience for Windy's development (or not anymore?), because despite the updates and new features in the last 12 months, it makes less and less sense for me to keep it up.
-
@Suty so to get this straight, the disappearing of the percentage after a couple seconds is intended behavior? We will not get the percentage back?
-
Hello I am having an iPhone and I can see the same issue.
Predictably is there for a few seconds then I can see only the colored dot and no way for example to click on it so i can see the percentage.
The only workaround for me to see the percentage for next days is to click on my favorite place and very quickly scroll to next day to see it.
So the number is there is either it should not disappear or it should be a way to be there. If you wish to be that behavior as default it should be an option to be visible all the time if a user wish.
Looking forward for your feedback.
Thanks

I agree with the users above, the predictability percentages need to be at least clickable or permanently displayed.
People who use Windy like detailed information, so please make the predictability percentages visible, it it is quite useful information.
