      @dzuremar Thanks a lot for the new forecast model. I am also looking forward to Global ICON and COSMO-DE (2.8 km resolution) from DWD's open data server. Happy new year! 🎇🍾🎉

        Can anybody explain the advantage that brings this new model? I mean, why should I check it too? (Not being critical, I love to see new additions like this)

              @gutiserra This model has a resolution of 7km compared to the ECMWF model with a 13km resolution on windy.com. It should gives shaper forecast images with ICON. As example, just look to wind analyse on Corsica island in Mediterranean Sea with ICON and with ECMWF, you wil see more details with ICON. This is interesting for short forecast time (24h or 48h) close to mountain and sea shore. But more resolution does not mean always better forecast !

                    @ivo it looks very impressive, where can I read more about this model? How do they get more resolution?

                          Yes! I appreciate that!
                          but why you downgraded ECMWF from 9 km to 13 km?

                            @TomSlavkovsky
                            Since Mar. 2016 the horizontal grid spacing for ECMWF model is
                            0.1° x 0.1° lat/long.
                            As 1° = 60 Nautical Miles = 111 km
                            0.1° = 11 km

                              according to:
                              https://www.ecmwf.int/en/about/media-centre/news/2016/new-forecast-model-cycle-brings-highest-ever-resolution
                              "... The new cycle reduces the horizontal grid spacing for high-resolution forecasts from 16 km to just 9 km."

                                        @ivo said in Windy offers new model ICON-EU with 7km grid resolution:

                                        @dzuremar

                                        @dzuremar We are also planning to use ICON data, but Netcdf jar can not open the grib file. What tools or library do you use to handle it?
