I live in the u.s. and have inches as a measurement which does work in the animation mode but for some reason in total accumulation it appears as millimeters

You should see a set of bars (like above) at the lower right corner of the screen. Just click and/or keep clicking the lowest one (probably where you see the mm display right now) and eventually inches will display.
