Arctic cold outbreak over Europe
-
A Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) observed last week over North Pole.
The temperature rose from -80 to -37 C.
Following this warming, the high altitude winds reverse to flow eastward
instead of their usual westward and weaken the jet stream.
This results in easterly winds near the surface and a dramatic reduction
in temperature (eastern, central, western Europe and parts of Mediterranean and Balkans) by the end of the weekend and is expected to last into March. We'll monitor the situation
