Hello everyone, new to the forum. I´d like to know about the waves. when I choose wave height on windy.com they are displayed in metres, all good and well. However I can not find whether this wave height is maximum wave height or significant wave height.

what I really need is to know the significant wave height! is there a setting to change or at least know which one is displayed?

I don't have an answer to your question but I do have a tip. If you want to display the data in feet, just keep clicking the bar at the bottom right corner of the screen. Eventually it cycles to feet.

A good general rule is max. wave height=1.5 x sign. wave height (swh).
BUT ... keep in mind that the theoretical maximum height is actually around 2x the s.w.h.
ALSO ... mariners have observed (very rare) rogue waves (or freak waves)
              with height > 2.2 x the s.w.h.
              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rogue_wave

P.S. ECMWF provides some experimental products about it. I don't think they are available to Windy.com

@meteo-gr .Yes that's a good general rule. thanks so much for getting involved in the topic. now my original question remains: is it the maximum wave height that is displayed or is it the significant wave height.

                  Windy displays significant wave height.
                  For description of weather overlays:
