We are proud to announce that we are now able to forecast Thunderstorms, which is a map layer created as a combination of Rain and Lightning density.

Many efforts have resulted in lightning density forecast by ECMWF – which is very accurate. Kudos to all the guys in London and Reading who did a great job. Technical description is here.

Enjoy the new Thunderstorm forecast and STAY SAFE!!!!

Great idea to mix the layer of rain and lightning

Hmm. I'm not sure about this "mix".
See the following screenshots for today afternoon.
At the left image, someone may think that Czechia will face more intense tstms
          than Moldova and Ukraine.
But... lightning forecast (right image) predicts more tstms over Ukraine!

I'm afraid this will be more obvious during the winter,
when a full 3 hrs of moderate rain (greenish colours) with a very low lightning density
will interpreted as moderate (or heavy) thunderstorms.

A good way to overcome that problem is to show bigger lightning symbols
over areas of high lightning density.
          The same with "snow".

P.S. how about to leave "rain/snow" feature as it was in the past
and to announce this new layer as "all-in-one" ?

There are different thickness of flash symbol as it can be seen on this zoomed view on a thunderstorm area in North Dakota this morning at 9h00 UTC. They correspond roughly to the lightning density.

In winter is it possible to have snow precipitation and thunderstorm at the same place? Then it could give some display trouble?

Yes! There are different thickness of flash symbols!
Ivo, sorry! I did not notice it earlier.

Yes, it is possible to have thundersnow.
              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thundersnow

If you zoom-in over east Nepal-China border (Himalayas) you'll see such areas.

I believe (if 2 different situations exist, e.g. snow and tstm) the "strongest" feature must come into view (appear).
The "strength" is determined by the "bigger number" in W.M.O. table of weather symbols.
              See: wxSymbols_anno1.pdf , here http://weather.rap.ucar.edu/info/about_wxsymbol.html

Footnote from DrD...I would like a float-out label on the icons. I don't know which one does what, yet. It would help if they had a mouse-over label. Thanks, though...this is still great.
