I am a boater and use Windy for planning our cruising. The issue, however, was recently we were in Long Island Sound and planning a move to another port. We were in the fog in Mystic, CT. Windy showed fog in the Connecticut river, but clear in Long Island Sound. So we’re headed out only to be in dense fog the entire way to our next port.
Two days later, we were heading from Shelter Island to Wickford, RI. I checked Windy and it indicated no fog. Thirty minutes out we hit dense fog with zero visibility. This lasted for the next 4 hours. Windy showed no fog.
Obviously, this app needs major improvement when it comes to forecasting fog.

What kind of forecast did you use? Map layer fog or "table view"? And you are right - forecasting of fog is tricky and most models fail to forecast it precisely.
