ECMWF provides forecast simulated radar base reflectivity (dBZ)
-
Why not provide this output on windy? It has an advantage over the 3 hr rainfall in that it shows instantaneous rainfall whereas the 3hr rainfall rate is an average over the last 3 hours.
It is easier to locate areas of convective activity with the simulated radar forecast as it does not average out rainfall over the previous 3 hours.
Please consider adding the ECMWF forecast simulated radar reflectivity to Windy -
A example of an advantage:
ECMWF may forecast a line of convection moving steadily with the wind, for example. The forecast radar output will show this as a line whereas the 3hr rainfall rate currently on Windy will depict this line as a circle of colour as the rainfall is an average over the previous 3 hours.
In other words, the forecast radar output will provide additional detail to forecast precipitation. -
@rogerdoger Hi, rain layer in Windy is 3h accumulation, not average. I did not find simulated radar in ECMWF products. Could you please send me some link?

@tz
a) ECMWF provides Simulated Satellite Data (SSD).
SSD are forecast images of cloud cover like those taken from satellites.b) In this site

I found a product named "Base reflectivity" that seems to be an ECMWF product
but I'm not sure that ECMWF provides such a forecast product. -
@gkikas-lgpz Thank you! We were already experimenting with simulated satellite data, but did not found it useful for Windy. Regarding simulated dbz: I am afraid that there is no such product. This is list of current ECMWF forecast products: https://www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/datasets/set-i

@tz
Hi,Sorry for the confusion
The actual product is instantaneous precipitation rate....see the link below which is basically the same as simulated radar. You have to scroll down a bit to find it.
https://www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/documentation-and-support/evolution-ifs/cycles/summary-cycle-45r1
It is included with with the new lighting forecast data in the latest model update.
The base reflectivity output from ECMWF I mentioned is in fact the instantaneous precipitation rate converted to radar dBZ values.
Could you add this product (instantaneous precipitation rate) to Windy please?
Cheers,
Mark.

Just to clarify: It is Total Precipitation Rate (same as Instantaneous Precipitation Rate)
Thanks,
Mark.

@rogerdoger Hi, unfortunately not. Only if there are more people requesting it, but I think that this layer would not be widely used.

Hi,
That's a shame. I can't see the problem in adding it for those that would use it. As I mentioned above, it has advantages over the 3 hour precipitation.
Surely, the more choice for users, the better!
