Climate and Weather related parameters investigation (Coastal )

Please guide which weather and climate parameters I may study. Please also suggest if I select last 2 decades would it be fine or I need to study 5 decades data.
I want to do a research and see the weather and climate related patterns and change over the this period.

Kindly also suggest name of any Prof. who may help and guide during my studies.
