I hear you, and you are of course strictly correct in the technical classification aspect.....etc....

I totally agree with you. Especially with the importance of gusts on land and their effects. Then I know that the Beaufort scale is not meaningful on land while it is still used at sea (The Beaufort scale is widely used for marine weather forecasts in most of European and Asian countries)
I have set my Wind color palet on this scale because each degree « speaks » to me, even if I never use the Beaufort degrees to display Wind on Windy, only knots or km/h.

Your job on color settings is very impressive !

I'm glad we "totally" agree on that. I'm Australian, we used to get Beaufort Scale based Sea-State detail on scheduled marine radio weather broadcasts on HF and 10 meter band, with old-school lat and long area info delivered by voice, plus marine fax for when you really wanted to know the details. But the marine service went away around a decade ago as comms technology leapt ahead. I expect all vessel operators convert to Sea-State in their head. Even when I worked at sea the thing that mattered to us was the wave and swell height, in meters. We knew what sort of day it would be based on that. Windy displays that information superbly. Thanks for the graphical feedback too, cheers.

  • I decided to max-out detail and shading in the overlays to see how Windy dealt with it, here's one of them:

  • Added full color to the wind map, doubled the detail level and smoothed out the shading.

  • I've identified a nagging problem with the snow layer, i.e. it can't plot more than 1 meter of snow depth without the display developing contour artifacts. This same overlay is also used as the overlay for 'Snow Depth', and guess what? The snow is usually over 1 meter deep. So if you make it to display that one, it can't display either properly. So a sub 1 meter depth overlay it is.

So here's the best overlay I can make within that limitation.
