Windy Customized Graphics - Version 3

  • Dust mass [dust] - Removed

  • This is a final version of the Dust-mass overlay, can’t optimize it further at this point.

  • This is a fully recreated Cloud base overlay. It uses a precise 100 ft increment to 18,000 ft. There’s full color shading from 1 foot (bright scarlet red) to 18,000 feet (bright green). I removed all color shading above 18,000 ft (to de-clutter the display) but all the higher-altitude cloud-bases above 18,000 ft are being displayed in light grey.

Cloud tops will be re-done soon.

  • This is a new Cloud tops overlay designed to cater to IFR, “VFR on top”, and “VFR over the top”. There’s shaded color coverage from 2,500 ft to 60,000 ft. There is no color applied to cloud tops occurring below 2,500 ft, but cloud tops from 500 ft to 2500 ft are present and displayed in light grey tones.

  • I've fine tuned and updated the Cloud-tops overlay shading between 500 ft and 10,000 ft.

  • Translucent contour shading added to SO2 overlay.

I've gotten the new contour shading working but it's not finished as yet, I'll be experimenting with color options to add more visual contrast to bring out the detail.

  • Setting removed.

  • This is the final SO2 overlay setting. It's been optimized to display up to 1,875 µg/m³.

  • I doubled the display sensitivity of the Rain Accumulation overlay and increased the display range by 20%, to 2,500 mm.

    Description:

This has the same overlay colors as the prior version (up to 1,000 mm) except the increment used has been reduced from 2.5 mm increment steps, to 1.25 mm steps in rainfall. This means that a color which was prior used to depict 300 mm of rainfall, will now show 150 mm of rainfall instead. Thus I've also had to add a new shading above 1,000 mm up to 2,500 mm. The result shows much more detail and contrast compared to the last version. The lower rainfall events are displayed with double the contrast and detail, while the highest values and their associated structures, development and movement are depicted more clearly than before as well - more detail everywhere.

    The setting is here:
    https://community.windy.com/post/19252

    Example:
    g.png

    e.pngf.png

Note that if the data gradient becomes very steep during intense events this produces a blocky display when zoomed-out but smooths-out once zoomed-in. In this case the forecast is for extremely intense rainfall (1,910 mm).

    c.pngd.png

With the standard Windy overlay there's literally no visible detail being displayed. It's hard to believe these are showing the same area, time and event.

    a.pngb.png

NOTE: I've mildly edited the upper-end shading since I posted these images and have updated the setting but not these example images (the colors are only slightly changed to improve visual smoothness).

  • Rain overlays have now been updated with expanded ranges for rainfall in extreme events with improved sensitivity to small changes as well.

  • I've doubled the visible detail of the cloud base overlay between ground level and 10,000 ft via adding the color pink to designate cloud bases at 5,000 ft, as per this legend.

    Cloud Base Legend.png

I've also included the same colors as used in the Cloud Tops overlay for the Cloud bases occurring above 18,000 ft.

    Examples

    1.png2.png

    3.png4.png

As you can see the setting presents a much more detailed and useful picture of cloud base altitude details and their locations to pilots - at all civil flyable altitude levels.

I'll be altering the Cloud Tops overlay soon to properly match the new Cloud base shading colors, so there's almost no difference between them.

  • I've now altered the Cloud tops overlay's colors and shading to match the Cloud bases overlay except below 2,500 ft, where the tops gradually become shades of grey below 1,700 ft.

Examples: the level of useful visual detail is through the roof compared to the standard overlay. The color shades are accurate to +/-100 ft of altitude increments. This is a fully linear overlay.
