      It's my understanding that GFS is fv3, as of now. GFS is the model that the Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses (noaa). Noaa has updated gfs to fv3, or gfs includes fv3, or it is a new model. All the same, i believe gfs is fv3? Still referred to as gfs. I have also read several reports that say that the new model may be as good as or better than the European model, interesting.

        @jethroxd

        If so the practical differences in resolution and forecasting detail makes that sort of claim/comparison rather questionable, IMO.

            Have you switched to the new GFS FV3 or is it still the old version which is used on Windy?

                  So what is the grid resolution? Windy still says GFS @ 22km but isn’t FV3 @ 13km?

                    You should clarify that in the text on the windy page if you click at clock symbol

                    Greetings from Tomber

                      @Tomber42
                      As I see the wind (or temperature) field over rough terrain (mountains)
                      I believe that GFS is (still) at 22km resolution.

                        I have got some information from weather specialists and they confirm that:

                        • the old GFS v 14 had already a native resolution of 13km same as the new GFS FV3 v 15. This is the computational resolution.
                          It is confirmed by NOAA :
                          « GFS Version 15.1 maintains a horizontal resolution of 13 km and has 64 levels in the vertical extending up to 0.2 hPa »
                        • The old GFS was dispatched to users by GRIB files with a 0.25° resolution. And this is not changed with the new GFS FV3 v 15.

                        247D2E4C-0231-43E8-B073-6C12480714FE.jpeg

                        Note that 0.25° is close to 27 km, when 23 km is 0.2°

                          @Tomber42 I would also like to see the FV3 being shown in the Clock info panel, something like (GFS - FV3) just to be more clear. :)

                            Hello guys,

                            Here's where you can get more information about FV3-GFS new model: Significant information on the FV3-GFS https://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/users/meg/fv3gfs/official and select model (real-time): https://data1.gfdl.noaa.gov/fvGFS/fvGFS_products.php Or find the Pivotalweather portal. You can compare the data there too.
