Enroute 2D weather cut (similar to Gramet or Meteoblue)
-
I have asked about this feature long time ago. Is there any possibility to implement it on Windy?
-
There are only a few services that offer cross-section weather along a route:
- Gramet - it's old, doesn't update and offer to build a route from airport to airport
- Autorouter - an improved version of Gramet. You can check weather along any route and it use more advanced GFS model, but it's still not very reliable.
- Meteoblue - the same old GFS data, with, allegedly, some adjustments, but I eventually found, over many flights, that it was too unreliable to tell me anything which wasn’t blindingly obvious from the MSLP.
So my question is, can we expect such a feature from Windy, considering that you have so much weather data at your finger tips?
Please, make sure there will be at least an option to input enroute altitude, average moving speed (in still air) and how it's going to be affected by winds aloft to get an appropriate timings. Vertical speed would be a huge plus to see your path in climbing/descent phase of the flight. Hopefully, it's not going to be overly complicated to imply.

well, 1.5 years has passed since that thread. I would really appreciate if they come up with an update to this feature.

@Gkikas-LGPZ , @TomSlavkovsky ,
I would also like to add my support for the development and inclusion of a "cross-section" forecast into the Windy platform.
From an aviation forecasting perspective, this add-in would be greatly appreciated and would be supported from those in the aviation industry (both pilots and forecasters).
I don't believe the initial version should require the "icing/turb" display presented in the Ogimet GRAMET product. Just a simple cross section of the currently available model weather data (for instance, wind/temp/dew point/RH and cloud groups - possibly precip) between multi-points would be more than adequate to assist with flight planning and weather route monitoring.
Appreciate all the work and development currently going into this platform.

Agree with your proposition and request.
In addition it would be very much appreciated (by all, I'd bet) if such displays, as per the pop-up weather point location forecasting strip, had the option to expand them up to full-screen size for much easier viewing and comprehension of the displays - at least in the internet version of Windy.

@igor-320 concur, this would be a realllllly useful feature.

I also wanted to vouch for implementation of 'route import' by uploading any kind of popular format like Google GPX or Garmin FPL (you can check them all on autorouter website), so you don't have to manually re-draw your flight planned route again.

As a GA pilot I would also VERY much like to see such an Enroute weather "cut". Thx.

As this is one of the most desirable features, it has reached the top of our todo list. We cannot promise any exact date, but we are working on it :-)

@stitch He is working 12h a day 7days a week and I am standing behind him with a whip.
Seriously this feature will be so cool that maybe it will be premium service with subscription only.

Dear Windy team,
I also would appreciate if you will add an option into the app (as well as into the web version) to visualize your flight planned route (and import it as GPX to save time), so we can have a Poor man's weather radar for pilots :) The app lacks speed control compared to web-version and I also would like to see more frames per time unit (right now it refreshes with a speed of 1 frame/3 minutes). Maybe you can make another time period in addition to 12/6/1 hour, say, for the latest 15 minutes which will be the most frame-dense period (for ex. 1 frame/minute) ? When pilots are already in the air, they're interested only in very latest weather data and 15 minutes may serve this need well.
I usually fly at lower altitudes and can receive mobile broadband connection from time to time (depending on location) and an option to reduce downloadable traffic is highly demanded. Maybe you can make an option to preload specific part of the map (just like in Google maps) and fine-tune overall downloaded traffic to reduce unnecessary stuff. Again, the goal is to receive fresh & updated data as soon as your phone/tablet receives broadband connection , because it may be lost in next minute.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Dear Wind team,
please respond! :)

Not exactly cross sections, but something similar: windy-plugin-fp

@rittels Thanks! I'll check it out!
I'm still would like to hear some feedback on my latest request from developers. Right now, there is no way to use the app when you select "Distance & planning" option (long tap anywhere on a map), because you can't save the route and the rest of options are not available when you have selected "Distance & planning".
