      Wow, that's something you don't see every day, a hurricane and a total solar eclipse in one picture!

photo: GOES West;
desc: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) & NASA;

      The spectacular shot that shows the moon's shadow barreling across the Pacific Ocean, just south of Hurricane Barbara was captured by GOES-West, a weather satellite that's a joint project of NOAA and NASA.

      The shadow reached the Chilean coast around 4:40 p.m. EDT (2040 GMT) on July 2 and kept heading east across South America's narrow southern wedge toward the Atlantic.

      Few more interesting facts

      • Hurricane Barbara is the second named storm of the 2019 Pacific Hurricane season
      • Barbara peaked as near Cat 5 hurricane and while still active is now weakening
      • The solar eclipse is the first total solar eclipse since the August 2017 "Great American Solar Eclipse," and US won't see another one until April 2024
      • Southern South America will experience total solar eclipse in December 2020
